The CPU determines GPU performance. On Nvidia anyway.

Well it is. You want some screen shots?

The RX 6800XT is a better product than the RTX 3080. I’ve used both and RDNA2 is jus a better experience.
The 10gb VRAM buffer has been discussed at length in this thread and has never been proven insufficient but feel free to add to the discussion if you have some new information that's come to light.

The 6800XT is a good product but is it better than the 3080? I guess it depends on what you want from it but personally I prefer a card that has the ability to run new AAA games with the lastest graphical enhancements turned on.

Agreed. Great card, but if I had to pick I would go 3080 due to my needs personally.

Oh and yeah, been what, nearly a year now since the 3080 is out, we are yet to get a game that is worth playing that needs more than 10GB VRAM. By the time we do next gen will be here and we will be on those.

I’ll pop some screen shots up later. In my experience yes.

RX 6800XT>RTX 3080

To get the most of Ampere you need a top end CPU and RAM both overclocked to within an inch of their existence, along with extreme cooling and a very high end PSU. On top you need to be running a DLSS supporting game and probably a high end NVME drive to catch any buffering/page file swaps in the case of the RTX 3080 and it’s 10gb VRAM limit. Move away from that scenario and RDNA2 is better.

I could well believe that with 16GB of VRam the 6800XT has better or more consistent frame times.

Even if the game doesn't need more than 8 or 10GB, which is not an exacting argument as games will (to with in limits) make do with whatever they have by file swamping, the less VRam you have the more of that will go on so its not difficult to see how more is better, if you have a 10GB card and using 8.7GB but the same game with a 16GB GPU using 10.6GB i have no doubt you will feel a difference.

Then Nvidia would be burning even more CPU clock cycles with memory calls and a 6gb difference could be easily swamp system memory and then you end up calling on even more CPU cycles caching back to storage from RAM. All while the lowly RTX 3060 has long tapped on processing grunt and has 12gb of VRAM twiddling it’s thumbs. Got to love Nvidia.

Probably partially due to the epic **** up with drivers in the 5000 series with the black screens. They were doing so well with drivers before that.
There is still a rumour floating around that this was down to a hardware bug in RDNA 1 that couldn't/wouldn't be fixed, rather than AMD's driver team regressing and going to sleep.

Could be, but not so sure as a family member had that issue with a non RDNA card. Such a shame as AMD were doing so good up until that point with drivers.

I have AMD GPU's and cant see this being a current issue? I think its one of them stains on the brand that wont ever go. I would think if current 6000 series was bad it would be all over the forum?

Not been an issue for some time as I recall. This was an issue like a couple of years ago. Nothing to do with the 6000 series.

What is sad about it is they had done so well recovering from that stain, but then ruined it all with the black screen driver issue.

VRAM issues become more evident a few years into the lifespan of a GPU,especially if the next generation equivalents have more VRAM. Also,if you are into modding games, etc again having more VRAM is useful(and modding is one of the main advantages of using a PC over a console,as it its much more limited with the latter systems).

I recall the suggested bug being linked with the legacy Polaris support, so conceivably any driver issue regarding Polaris - real or emulated - would crop up with the 500 series too. I know my other half has intermitted issues with her RX 570 to this day.

But it's all wild speculation of course and we'll likely never know.

my rx5700 was a nightmare having to run old drivers until feb this year to avoid the black screens

ended up with a rx6700xt not my first choice in anyway shape or form but to be fair its a cracking card not had a single issue but was worried

does system memory effect any of this
