The dark messiah

I bought it on release day, for £29.99 in Game. It was fun, with all the swords and decapitation and daggers and bows and giant worms and stuff. But it got boring after about 3 hours of play. I've got it installed somewhere on my PC, but haven't played it for aeons. Haven't touched the multiplayer either, as it looks absolutely rubbish. Steer clear of this, unless it goes really cheap. Stick with something cheaper and better, if you're looking for an RPG get Oblivion, and if you're after an FPS get FEAR or HL2.
And the Zombies, Spiders, and Facehugger things are just BORING to fight. It gets rid of the awesome sword technique stuff, and replaces it with dull "Mash the mouse button to slash at this enemy's face for about 10 minutes until it dies. If you don't, you'll die, and have to play from about half an hour's play away! Hooray!" Avoid this game.

It is cheap £15 for a game thats less than 6 months old.

if you sit there slashing at them then that's probably why it's boring. You'll never kill them like that... They need power attack just like anything else.

i got DM before xmas, im still playing it....wife/kids etc :(
it is however fabulous!
a real breath of fresh air for me and a change from my normal shootahs.

like others here i squandered my skill points across the board. i found at later levels i needed more strength and sword skills as the combat gets quite tough (imo).

once you level your strength up though heads and limbs go rolling :D

i play it on a 4400+ @ 2.5 and gainward 7800gs+ 512 @ 600/1400. @1280x1024. with gfx settings maxed and hdr on its a real joy to play.

since i installed it i have'nt once played bf2/2142 and i've just bought oblivion :)

this swords and sourcery malarkey is great fun.

games like DM make a sweet change from the staple ww2/future shootahs.

Finished Prey last night and was in the need for something else so went for this. Haven't played any of the previous M&M games or indeed any other RPG! However, this looks like it may be an interesting combination. Does it matter hugely if I have not played the other games? I imagine I may miss out on some details but nothing major.

Also, should I be able to run it full pelt on my setup?

You dont need to play any other M&M games.....and tbh there are hardly any RPG in this game.....think of it more as a FPS with a simple skill system.

As for running on your rig it should be fine. I run it on a Xp2400 with a rad9800 pro and a gig of ram......choppy in bits but perfectly playable

I couldn't stand the long loading times, choppy frame rates and I have to admit the full version was a bit of a let down. However the Crusade multiplayer mode is brilliant.

Didnt have a problem with load times, fps or smoothness. Ran fine at 1800 x 1440 on my 21"CRT and everything on max inc HDR.

Seriously though, i have played much worse! Its not as deep or confusing as oblivion either!

Awesome game.

Runs like a dream on my rig. The loading times certainly aren't anything major. The combat system is excellent and is far better then oblivion's IMO. Like well splattered said, it's not as "deep" as oblivion but for Dark Messiah's first-person action feel, it suits it. I played through quite a few hours and haven't finished it so I certainly wouldn't say it's short either.

The MP isn't as good as the SP but there's something about it which brings me back to play it for hours at a time.

Dark Messiah is a worth while buy IMO!

I had a real headache with getting this game up and running over the weekend. It ran fine the first time, then I saved and exited. However, after that Steam got hold of it and started to install updates, after which I couldn't get the blasted thing to start again. I uninstalled Steam, deleted the .dll files and reinstalled the game and, after fiddling with the virtual memory, got it to work.

My main beef with this game, apart from the load times which are frustratingly longer than games like Prey or Doom3, is the naffness [mainly in the dialogue] and my lack of care about the characters. And why do they always have to stick in some big-breasted woman? Not that I'm complaining but the things they are given to say are just cringeworthy. At the point where you defeat the cyclops at the beginning she came out with "That was great, I could.. hug you". I nearly died of embarassment.

Overall I need to give this game more goes. Granted I'm more into other horror-based FPS so this is slightly different for me but I wish they'd have sorted out the bugs at least.

Dark Messiah does have its bugs, and it does have its flaws and is pretty hard, but tbh, now I've got into the swing of things, Im actually really enjoying it, the violence and physics really lend themselves to a fantasy fps(slasher), and despite the flaws, if you have a beefy machine, I'd recommend it, it looks great, and is great fun.

Theres nothing quite like booting a goblin to iminnent death on some spikes, or creeping up behind a wounded black guard and lopping his head off, then kicking his body (which had collapsed against some crates) off the ship into the sea.

I run it at 1600x1200, all settings high/very high, with HDR full on, and 4xAA, 8x AF and it looks really really good, framerate goes from 70-30 during normal play, usually hovering around 40-50 unless theres a lot going on, which is more than playable.

With high settings, the spider temple is a real anti-arachnophobe, really made my skin crawl sometimes, I dont have any good screenies, but they look horrible, especially moving and with hdr and filtering. *shudder*

Tbh, despite its shortcomings, once you've got it working, for the £14.99 its currently going for, I'd say its easily worth the money.

Yes, I need to give it more goes. The graphics are good, I'm running it at 1024x768 on High with 2 x AA. I couldn't see that much difference between 1024x768 and 1280x1024. I still get stuttering in some parts which I would put down to problems in the game rather than my hardware, it's just a bit of annoying because I like to be immersed in games and not get pulled into 'reality'.

And yes, £15 is a good price for it. I would never pay more than £20 for a game, no matter what it was.

Loved every minute of this game. Ran very well on my system & only encountered a couple of small bugs. Didn't crash once either though I appreciate that probably puts me in the minority.

Best bits for me were:
1. creeping up on goblins & listening to their conversations about smelly stupid orcs etc lmao :D
2. sniping enemies heads off with bow & arrow or kicking them off cliffs

Looking forward to any expansion packs/mods etc....

Reading warnea1984 's post am I correct in thinking that the retail box version can be registered on steam so it auto downloads updates etc?
