I have an keen interest in the Deep net, I have watched some clips on Youtube, in fact I have probably seen all of them..I get the impression from the clips that if you try and access the Deep Net without the proper Browser (Tor) your computer goes bang and all the wheels fall off !!! Any one been on there ?

I am interested in taking a look myself but would like to here from somebody who has already taken a look. I would just like to add that this is pure curiosity, I have NO intentions of doing anything illegal. I also have an old PC so I dont really care if the wheels do fall off.

Admins if this post is not allowed or this is a taboo subject please feel free to delete, just drop me a message so I dont spend hours trying to find this post.

Thanks guys

and you just D/L Tor, fire it up and away you go ?? So the anonymity thing, the whole web is encrypted, its not that you have to be anonymous to go on there (because of hackers and alike) but iits encrypted ANYWAY... haha Im starting to get it now.

Hang on ....I have just got to look up obfuscate (Meaning to make something less clear or harder to understand) ;) I agree with Rroff... Still got to give it a go though tbh..

I watched a TED talk on it the other night, it was the actor from the Bill & Ted film, Alex Winter i think. A very interesting talk.

Its a bit frustrating as I have a broad understanding of what is out there and how the internet works - I've a ton of experience with coding for TCP/IP, etc. but don't really know how to convey it all.

There is the web based stuff - where you can access services directly from a web browser if you know the IP and port regardless of whether it has been indexed by search engines, etc. then there is stuff like TOR where you can only access via another service like TOR. But then there are loads of services other than that as well - there are smaller scale operations that still use services like the old BBS systems of old but hidden away from any kind of direct connection, etc. (some might be exposed via TOR others using their own methods) which I'm not sure how you'd classify - which are more the real "dark" net.

Is the whole network encrypted then ? just different encryptions?

I already use a VPN server thats SOP, in fact there's a setting on it for Onion over VPN, always wondered what that was for..that i take it is a double encryption, I can D/L onion and no one knows that I have it....except of course everyone on this forum... :) ssssshhhhhh

I see what you did there.

What did I do there ????

I’m going on a little expedition this week, iv checked out “Tails” that’s got to be the way forward, I’m starting to enjoy this cloak and dagger anonymity stuff, and lurking about the deep net hiding in the shadows... damn that’s good I should have become a poet rather than an ... adventurer

Tor browser do a deep web Wikipedia, it’s a listing of websites and their addresses although the websites are just random numbers and letters, they all end in .onion There’s my map right there.

If you take the necessary precautions and you can do anything. I have an old laptop I'm going to use load tails onto a USB , I already use a (paid for) VPN. Then I'm going to run Tor and have a look see whats so terrifing about the Deep/Dark web. If it all goes wonky (I dont see how it will) I'll drop the whole lot in to the nearest skip.

Well. I said I was going to. Nothing REALLY horrifically shocking, a few places to buy firearms which is quite alarming. Lots of seedy looking sites mostly porn, couple of live stream websites (they charge a fortune).
Didnt see any Hitman for hire sites perhaps they are all taking a break or all gone to a Hitman convention in Florida.
Lots of Drugs sites.. you pay with Bitcoin and they will deliver them where-ever you choose. (Nans House) :) Theres a few strange social group sites, which is ironic an anonymous social group...not very social.

All in all, I found it quite interesting and I'm glad I had a look, just to ease my curiosity. Not in a hurry to get back there..

I have run several Malware, Spyware & Antivirus scans on my Laptop thats all good, I'v had a shower and checked, nothing fallen off yet. So I really dont see what all the fuss is about...
Poor old Ross he really did get the ****** end of the stick didnt he. PS I Should have bought a couple of grands worth of Bitcoin when it very first appeared ....:)

Always wanted a butchers on there you have eased my mind.

I think now after having a look round on there and thats ALL I did (I did not enter any pay4porn sites) a lot of the stuff you read about or see on Youtube is bull****. Sure there are hidden market places and darknet websites but if your only looking you have bugger all to worry about...Probably a little different if you get caught by the Mrs ordering a load of AK's and having them shipped to her mum's house :)

You do get the sence of excitment though but its no worse than walking around Soho or the Dam on a saturday night.

Hmmm I have just read an article about the Deep Web being set out in layers. There are supposed to be 8 different layers in total. The "normal" internet is at level 1. The content of the net get more interesting/dangerous with every layer you go down. You need different encrytion software for each level. Tor being used to access levels 1-4... Level 8 is called The Marianas Level, after the Marianas Trench (Deepest part of the Ocean) Someone has a very cryptic imagination..
Does anyone know if this is true or just BS ?

i had a quick browse the other night found the usual stuff mentioned, there must be some proer shady stuff if you know the onion addresses but best not click on those anyways.

But the address do not give you any idea whats behind them... you dont know unless you look

I dont get the fascination with it if you have no use for the content out there and given you know the sort of content out there. Like, why browse if you know whats there but you are not looking to buy or download whatever is there?

Do you get a thrill out of possibly stumbling on something illegal or something?

I doubt there is anything that can be obtained through Tor that cant be obtained using a normal internet browser. The internet is big and all manner of people use it, you just have to know where to look. Plenty of websites offer drugs, guns and stuff. The vast majority are fake but there are most definitely some real ones out there. A lot of the drugs obtained by people i knew in my study days originated from big orders off the net.

Why did Armstrong go to the Moon?
Why did Hilary climb to the top of Everest?
Why did xl go on the deep web?

To see if he could and just because iits there ;)

(Footnote- I do not in any way compare myself to Mr Armstrong and Mr Hilary. Both great men) :D
