How do you know it was a speed camera though? Two windows nearly always means ANPR. The main clue though, is police vehicles parked up ahead of the van (usually around a corner somewhere).

because the driver receved a ticket for speeding and the photo had the two of us in the car pointing at the van......

The ANPR cameras are sometimes just tripod mounted, I think some of them were called TALON or something? We had the vans, then a couple of police motorcyclists 200m down the road to pull people.

They are there to spot people who don't have tax, mot, insurance, etc. They used them around here quiet a bit a few years ago and managed to arrest half a dozen criminals that were just going about their daily business (in less than road legal cars). Crime rate around here is down about 60% for the past 2 years...

Don't know if it's nationwide yet, but Plymouth has started sprouting ANPR cameras on some lampposts/cameraposts on roundabouts, in the "nicer" areas of town.

Just need rozzers to camp out next to them to pick up the dodgy buggers now :(

Is it true that speed cameras can tell the difference between small and large vehicles?

I was told earlier that they can tell if a lorry is doing over 40 on a national limit single carriageway, and will flash.

Have seen the ANPR cameras out a few times at the end of the M65 in Preston, thought they were speed cameras at first and was worried that i would be expecting a ticket.

Did a bit of research and found them to be ANPR cameras and i have since seen a police range rover just down the road from where they had the camera van parked up. No complaints from me, more dodgy gits off the road the better. :)

The speedcamera vans down here, plymouth - liskeard road, are white with a tiny black cam sign on the side and none of those markings like either above. You wouldnt know it wasnt a plumbers van.......untill you get the ticket. and yes they get away with that.

i have to agree the anpr is a good system however its very easy for the cameras and softwatre to be used to toll charging... see london cc for example, red ken installed all the cameras and told the masses they were for crime reduction... then six months later he mentions congestion charging. it makes you wonder

ANPR are great in theory but are flawed in reality. I got stopped driving past one the other day because my insurance company had made a mistake keying in my car registration in the database. I have been told I may stand trial for driving without insurance.

I sold the car the other day and an African gentleman bought it. It was his first UK car. I wouldn't let him test drive it as he had no insurance. He paid for it, took the keys and said he would be back later with an insured driver. He really just walked round the block came back got in it and drove off. Down the road was an ANPR camera which he sailed past unchallenged as the car was still marked with my insurance.

Good innit? And they only park on dual carriageways with stupid speed limits mostly. You'll never find them outside schools, they prefer to camp Embankment Road, perhaps the only 3 lane dual carriageway with central reservation, no houses and a 40 limit.

Same here. White vans with just one logo.

Their most popular place is above a section of fast dual carriageway. They're watching it because its downhill and changes from 70 to 50. Where they are watching is about 200yards after the 50 sign so you actually have to brake instead of just rolling down to 50.
