The Dissertation Thread

Average is 10k words, +or- 10%, anything over or under that and I would be deducting marks, a word limit is there for a reason!!

 That must be what, 55 pages?! No professor of mine would even touch 55 pages.

Lucky you, mine is 60 pages on using an artificial life simulation as a teaching aid for first year programming modules

Is there always a limit to the number of words?

Generally yes, otherwise its harder to mark. Because how can you deem a project of 2000 words better than a project of 10,000 words, if you get what i mean, i cant explain too well :p

Mine was about 11K words on 69 pages with images. Was mostly done by this time of the year and my project was on the shelf gathering dust because I finished it quite early. I was the only final year down the union getting smashed out my skull the night before the hand in :D

My word limit (or rather, word 'recommendation') was 5000 words and I wrote 12,500. They didn't seem to mind. I also managed to shoehorn a discussion of hallucinogenic drugs into a mathematics essay, so I was happy.

2000 of the right words can easily be better than 10,000 poorly chosen words, no problems at all. Some of my friends wrote dissertations far, far shorter than mine and got great marks. Some wrote longer dissertations and got fewer marks. For us it was definitely about what you said, not how many words you took to say it.

4th year of my MEng Mechanical Design, materials, and manufacture.

Group project of 6000 words on our 'secret golf project'. 5 of us in the group :D:D

But i do have 10000 words to write over easter in loads of other courseworks.

My limit is 15000 words but I'm aiming to write this and then edit out 10% of crap.

I'm still ****** that my literature review had to be 4500 words but the topic I chose has had nearly bugger all written about it.

I had to hand mine in last month. We were told 8000 words (+/-10%), and I managed about 7500 words, 60 odd references, and it came to about 45 pages in total (double spacing). I left it VERY late and did the whole thing in a week, not recommended :p

I handed mine in last friday. I did 9200 words, 55 pages. We had no max or min limit - but the "suggested" max was about 10k - so I'm about right and my supervisor liked it so I'm hopeful.

I'm willing to sell "Creating Image Access Rights Using Steganographic Techniques" - 24K words plus 8K lines of java for an even grand.

My subject is law and I've got 10,000 words to do total and I'm maybe 2,000 words into it. Hand in date of 28th April and I can't be bothered to do any more at the moment because it isn't near enough and therefore difficult enough yet. I'll force myself to do some soon though and maybe even finish the last essay as well which is due in the same week.

If anybody is interested my advice is, always remember somebody has to read it when you are finished, so keep it concise and focused, use clear heading, and if you have specific outcomes make sure you clearly address them.

Plus a twenty inside the front cover goes a long way ;)
