i actually remember the stuff i learned by myself after school better than the stuff in school.

copying stuff out till you have it memorised was never that great at getting me to "understand it", know it yes, but then since i haven't used most of it in years its faded away.

i just find that by reading something during the short period i'm actually interested in it i remember it and understand it much better than sitting down to deliberately learn something at a time when it holds no interest to me.

my point is, like you say there are times you have to check text books etc, having them in your pocket makes things much easier, and makes you more likley to do it.

i run through things when im bored, and hit a "wait what is it that comes next" step, i wont remember to look it up next time i get a chance to get the book, but if i can google it i can carry on.

Personally, I remember stuff better where I followed structured learning - but everyone is different, so that's a bit of an catch 22 debate really as we all learn and behave differently :)

I'm not denying the ability to look stuff up easily and quickly is useful, but there is also a lot of incorrect information and / or erroneous information out there too. As long as you have the presence of mind to question that and or not accept what you look up as gospel then yes I totally agree.

I think however, it is an enhancement, not replacement.

However this is not social media, that is the internet in general - which I agree is a useful tool and does aid things to a certain degree as long as you are no reliant on it.

I do not think social media enhances my life at all and could quite happily function (and do function) without it. This is different to the internet in general in my opinion.

Social media has too many downsides and in a whole is not much more than superficial pee in which the pot is stared. So no....

The rest, forums, youtube, online shopping, gaming, general interests and information. A big yes.

Being born in the early 70s I have both envy and pity for those that know not life without the interwebs...

of course not, but most young people know this and learn this while children.

the people this is a problem for are the older generation who continually get caught up in scams, lies and traps.

lets face it any kid who grew up with meatspin, and rick astley knows never trust a link.

Funny. Most young people I'm always hearing through others are always referring to Wikipedia like google it. As if Wikipedia is factual or a bible in some form.

no you said

knowledge not just problem solving.

Nice selective quoting there ;)

Now how about including the rest of the sentence I posted?

Googling an answer does require a level of skill though. You've got to shape your search parameters and assess the merit of information being returned. It's a skill that my parents don't have and even many people of my own generation lack.

Oh, I agree completely, watching what some people type in when they're trying to search for something is cringeworthy at times!

The gullible and the even more stupid, and me by accident a lot of the time.
I'd say the gullible and dumb people make up about 30% of the population, and like I said they shout loudly. Hard not to hear.

From 2010 now the internet has caused a very intolerant society. No tact, no openess to other views. If you you have a view that goes against the mob it becomes very nasty even on a personal level. You can lose your job dependant on how bad it is. Everyone says it is free speech but free speech nowadays only works if everybody else agrees with you or its petitions to get you fired. Or companies see what backlash you'll be receiving so they follow public opinion. So sponsors will drop you. You effectively join a blacklist nowadays if you dare say anything most dont like even if it is factual.

Most things now is mob rule and it is conditional through no tolerance.
