Lots of mods that tweak a lot of stuff, not to mention general asthetics, but the one must-have would be Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. This thing is huge.

Easily found on the net, I'd advise going there to find out about the gazillion fdeatures that makes this a must-have.

As for the officvial expansions: If you like Oblivion itself, you'll like the expansions, although Knights Of The Nine is a bit sparse, Shivering Isles gives tremendous amounts of satisfaction and you shouldn't miss it.

The GOTY edition contains everything iirc?

Well worth a play, well over 150 hours on my save (plus more where I went back).

There is a high res texture pack that makes it look even better around.

I'd play it vanilla first, with maybe just graphic mods - natural environments, qarls texture pack.

Once you've experienced the monsters-level-with-you mechanic, then you might want to start mucking around with mods.

I could never get Qarls Texture Pack to work :(

Agreed though, well worth the money since the Shivering Isles DLC is epic, and Knights of the Nine is great too. GotY just gives you all the stupid small DLCs too which is handy. Definatly play without gameplay mods first to see what you want to change.

Saying that, i refuse to play the game without the leveling mod now. Nice to actually PLAY the game instead of constantly have to worry levelling too frigging fast and gimping the stat boosts.

The FCOM_Convergence mod is the one im using at the moment. It can be an absolute pain in the rear end to work if you don't know what your doing and takes time to download but it really is amazing, changes the dynamics of the game completely, in a good way.

There is some information on there if you want to have a look, but it can get quite complicated.

If you're thinking of getting it, look for the £5 Oblivion and Bioshock deal. I picked it up and I've spent more time on it than any PS3 game I've bought recently. It is only vanilla oblivion though, no knights of the nine or shivering isles. Still, mods more than make up for that.

I've got quite a few mods going though. Main ones for me are:

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul - must get (or at least some form of overhaul/balancing mod)
CM Partners - quite a universal companion mod, and there are plenty of downloadable companions.
A keychain mod - very useful to clear up all those keys
The Lost Spires - an epic quest mod
Streamline - a performance boosting mod, eliminates a lot of "loading area" messages.
Open Cities is cool, but incompatible with a lot of mods. I've stopped using this because it breaks a lot of stuff.
DarNified UI - interface mod, makes it much more suitable for PC resolutions.
Supreme Magicka - magic overhaul, makes it more powerful but not overpowering, and adds a few new spells. There's also Midas Magic, but I found that overpowered and a bit silly, with things like nukes and transformers :p
Natural Environments - a great aesthetics mod, and hasn't given me any noticeable slowdown. Remember to put HDR on with this.

There's loads of others, but just take a look at TESNexus and PlanetElderScrolls.

Remember to pick up OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) and OBSE 0.17 (Oblivion Script Extender 0.17), they're very useful for mods. I'd also advise getting BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software) to optimize your mod load order, if you're running lots of mods. Wrye Bash seems to be recommended a lot, but I've not looked at it and I'm not quite sure what it actually is yet.

I had a look at some of the Magick mods but they always seemed far too over the top tbh. Magic is already ludicrously powerful in Oblivion, what i'm after really is more functions rather than blatantly overpowered stuff.

My main 2 mods now are a Levelling Mod and a Harvesting mod. The Harvesting mod does what it says on the tin, you go near a plant and it harvests it with the same chance as default, unrealistic but jesus is spending 30 seconds running around the University Garden better than spending 30 minutes tediously picking every plant.

Levelling mod just makes levelling less of a grindfest so you can actually play the game without worrying you'll gimp yourself if you don't pay attention to the multiplier. Also auto-levels quest reward items since nothing is more irritating than recieving a permanently gimped version of a brilliant high level item just because you wanted to actually play the game.

Oblivion is a great game and although the smaller DLC's are a bit meh, Shivering Isles is superb and almost worth the full price of the game alone.

As for user created mods, the list is almost endless. There are 10,000's of different mods. My advice is to play the game for a while to get used to the vanilla game, then you can see which bits you think need to be altered. Personally apart from a few graphics mods, extra dungeon mods and a house mod I haven't changed the base game much.

It's definitely worth it.

I recommend trying the game in vanilla first though
Then try installing a few mods (such as a levelling mod) to get used to how to do it
Then when your confident with mods (they aren't too hard really) and ready for a different experience to the vanilla game try some of the overhaul packs like Oscuro's (OOO) or martigen's Monster Mod (MMM) leading up to FCOM with totally changes the game , Integration ( add lots of quests ), or LAME ( magic overhaul)

The game is flexible and there are a lot of mods out there to be able to change the game to the way you like

Axil (Team FCOM , Team MMM and EVE project)

BTW if you intend to use mods - then Wryebash is almost a necessary as it's the most powerful mod installation / game tweaking tool out there (and reasonably easy to learn the basics of as well ?(well documented)

definately worth it. Theres also a lot of great mods out there for it.

Some of my favourites were:

Midas Magic
Natural Enviroments
Alive Waters
Thieves Arsenal
Deadly Combat

and most importantly RenGuardOverall

My favourite game, definately play it vanilla first, oh man I love thinking about the days when I was just discovering Cyrodiil.
