The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Personally I wouldn't give it more than a few minutes before applying the mods.

Well yes but you can't mod the game based on what others tell you without playing it first.

The levelling system for the game seems ok when you play it, then you realise just how much your character is getting gimped and if you want to level 'efficiently' you wind up hating the game because its so ****ing tedious. But you wouldn't be aware of it till you actually played vanilla.

Theres a lot of mods out there that are 'vital' to different players. None of them are necessary on your first playthrough. Not even the graphics ones. You can't appreciate Qarls till you've played the original a lot. If you can get it working.

The main thing you should do is install all the expansions and DLCs, patch it up and run all the unofficial patches. The way Bethesda seem to work is fix some things then leave the insanely big modding community to make a massive patch to fix everything else.

I disagree...at least for me. You only have to wander around for a few minutes to see the improvements made by some of the graphics mods...take the terrible vanilla UI as an example. Why would any PC player want to use that for a second longer than necessary? Same goes for something like Qarls....why would you need to play OV for any great length of time before appreciating any improvement?

Granted...some of the gameplay changes are different. You might want to experience the vanilla levelling system to see if it suits you. Personally I didn't, as I knew I didn't want that.

There seem to be a LOT of mods around. Is there aguide for the newbie to oblivion and modding, that doesn't need weeks of reading to plough through?

Not really. Just don't go nuts... and don't mod something too much. The more mods you have the more chance there will be conflicts. Likewise several mods that include changes to the same thing will cause problems.

Its best to keep it simple. A graphics upgrade, a UI mod, a balance/monster mod, levelling mod if you want, and then maybe a few tweeks to seperate things. Once you start adding mods for no other reason then you get problems. Theres usually a lot of lists out there that people have done listing good/useful mods. Just a question of reading up.

Definately get it. The beginning of Shivering Isles has one of the best openings to a game ever. I will not spoil the graphical effect - you have to see it for yourself :)

*screams* How the hell do you get these Texture Packs to work. I've got Qarls Texture Pack 1.3 OBMM version and Bomrets Shivering Isles Pack and neither work at all. It could just be that for some stupid frigging reason Oblivion has locked itself to Small textures and refuses to change...

I think only GotY deluxe has lots of DLC's. The GotY I got only has Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. Definitely play it. It's quite cheap from amazon and gameplay if I recall.

Oblivion is one of my fav games ever. I always seen to re-install and come back to it.

Indeed, i always reinstall it at some point before i get sick of it. Though at this rate i'll be sick of it before i even get FCOM and the texture packs to work.

Anyone else played Game of the Year Edition off Steam on Win7 64-bit.

Keeps crashing. At first i thought it was all the mods i was using but ive delete my entire Oblivion folder & downloaded it again.

This time i didnt add a thing, loaded into my game save ....crashed after 5 minutes.

Spent most of the day trying to get this game to work. Tempted to boot up my Vista 64-bit partition & give it a try.
