The Emirates FA Cup 3rd Round ** Spoilers ** [6th - 9th January 2023]

I've no issue with sticking to onfield decision if it can't be proven otherwise but what's surprising about this one is that VAR hasn't got more cameras set up at a stadium like Anfield. I could understand if it was a smaller team with not as many "important" games played but not a place where "big money" games are played.

I think Dale Johnson mentioned on twitter that there are just 5 calibrated cameras for VAR at each ground. I've no idea the difficulties and technicalities of calibrating a camera so it can be used or who is responsible for this, the broadcaster or the relevant football authority.

Surely the cameras should be time calibrated to each other too? It shouldn't be necessary to have one camera which shows the ball being played, the player potentially offside, and the player potentially playing him onside all in one picture. As long as you can see the two players to compare, a time stamp should be enough for the timing of the ball leaving the foot of the previous player.

I've just checked and you're right, the camera's are time synced to each other - providing they have one VAR camera that picks up the ball being played and another which has both the furthest forward attack and defender in shot then they can do their magic. Reading Dale Johnson's var review articles for both the Saka offside in the Arsenal - Liverpool game and this recent Wolves incident, the problem was no calibrated camera had both the attacker and defender in the same shot at the time the ball was played.
