Let's keep this clean please.

It seems that GeoHot the guy who hacked the iPhone has gained access to the PS3's Metldr Key.

This is a very important feat. The ability to decrypt the PS3's loaders, means the ability to get the keys for everything else on the PS3! Since MetLdr can't be updated with new keys, Sony's system is basically hacked for good!

So basically this now means the PS3 will get hacked to pieces, this will include running custom signed code for games too :(

Say hello to a million and 1 new aimbots for the PS3 online FPS world.

My mistake. I was thinking of the cryptokey thing mentioned in the other thread.

Always up for the idea of making consoles backwards compatible with as much things as possible but like you say if this opens the doors to mass hacking and everything that comes with id hope to god the find some way of fixing it.

Great news! The PS3 is gonna be an awesome media centre finally. Native MKV support would be nice.

...then again I'll never use it cus my PC is also hooked up to my TV, oh well.

I'm not going to bother buying into it, even though the idea of free games is nice it'll likely end up being a cat and mouse game resulting in my console getting banned or something, can't bebothered with that anymore.

Unless some how games Devs and Sony make money from this.. It's pretty bad news for people who actually care about the future of console gaming.

Sony could very easily throw in the towel like Sega did after this, Remember the launch of the ps3 nearly crippled Sony.

And this is new news, it has only happened tonight, they already have GT5 up and running on 3.50 firmwares :(

Not what I read, they have decrypted the files associated with the 3.50 games not got them running yet, the console will more than likely need a CFW for that to happen.

I would also not say it was the end for the PS3 by a long shot.

Holy overreaction!!!

"Playstation" is a brand name that is not going to go away so to say they will "throw the towel in" is ridiculous.

Yeah because the huge amount of piracy that went on, and still goes on for the PS2 and PS1 made them throw in the towel!

It's a game of cat and mouse, the developers release something, the pirates hack it resulting in something else being brought out by the developers.

The PS3 has lasted a very long time before it was hacked, something Sony should be very happy about. They can either try and fix the issue in new build PS3's or ignore it as chances are there is a new one being released 1-2 years from now.

The problem is that people want a console that can act like a PC, they want the internet and full media capabilities, which is why they like to put Linux and homebrew on them. If they can create a console that allows that but at the same time stops them from playing copies then they'll be quids in :D

I'd say the vast majority of people don't pirate though or just cant figure all that stuff out or be bothered.

So how many ps3's are there in the world and how many of those will be pirating ? it's probably under 5% ?

Depends if the ps3's in the hands of 'gamers' who do know how to do it, aka the psp.

Why the psp suffers so, it's not got the mass casual market to support it's darker side.

Same would go with the ps3, if it's got a healthy casual market who either don't know or don't care about any kind of hacking, it'll stand.

Same with the ds/360... they both have piracy built in, but in both cases they have huge casual markets that buy software.

While im sure there's a good sized casual base on the ps3, id imagine it's nowhere near what the 360 has. Probaly why sony bricks itself, it could go the way of the psp if the core of it's software buying base slices in half once easy on copied games come online.

I feel for Sony on this one, while no doubt they're an evil must make as much money as posible corperation.. they took a hit on the ps3 locking it down from piracy in terms of hardware sales in the short to medium term, resulting in the 360 becoming more entrenched and more popular platform. Why i have no problem with the machine being locked down for good.

We might only be a few days in, but this is definitely a candidate for "overreaction thread of the year", along with many of the replies.

Although what concerns me more is the people that seem to think that the PS3 being hacked is somehow a good thing.

i don't think it will be the end.

The keys to the xbox360 were found ages ago, and on-line is full of hackers. But still the xbox continues to sell well.

They will most likely have to follow MS and permanently ban from PSN anybody who is using a modified console.

An incentive like that will keep the problem minimized.
