The end of the walled garden?

Exclusive titles being open to all is the way forward.

Being able to download any old app from any place is going to be a nightmare.

Since everyone is on iPad/iPhones there’s not issues with having to go to your cousins uncles mates house to remove a virus. Be a nightmare.

I cannot see this being popular or even a good idea, apple will never open up there business model.

That said ps5 games on Xbox?
Why should Apple dictate that? If it's anti competitive we're being mugged off.

In a shocking development people who don't understand tech don't understand the complexities and massive downsides to opening everything up. Some of us like walled gardens and if we didn't...we would buy products that were not in that ecosystem.

I know Apple doesn't allow plenty of things that google allows. I am 100% OK with that and the tradeoffs. I like the fact my iPhone still works and get updates 6 years later. I like the fact that all my Apple kit plays nicely with each other. I like the fact the App store isn't full to the brim with utter dross. I like the fact I can choose.

So what's your problem with more choice? E.g. a different play store or way to perform micro transactions?

This just reminds me of the right to repair that people seem to think has no downsides and should apply to absolutely everything. It shouldn't. There needs to be a lot of common sense applied to make sure that it doesn't result in a complete mess and stagnation in technology.

Just because the walls are torn down wont mean that developers will make their software available for other platforms.

Because companies rely on these things to make money. If they aren't making money via that route they will put more adverts in to make it up. It will become a mess of different app stores. I don't want sideloading of apps on my iphone. I don't want a dozen competing app stores. I happily pay more money for apple products because they are simple. They do what I want them to do for the minimum amount of effort on my part. I don't want to worry about installing a browser on my phone when I get it. I don't want to wonder why an app I want isn't on the app store. I don't want to find that an app I downloaded is compromised because appstore X only takes a 5% cut and doesn't do any vetting of apps.

I don't want the quality control of apps to completely go out of the window because people are bypassing the app store. I know what Apple is and how they operate and if I don't like it I can buy another brand.

More choice doesn't always equal more choice, it can just as easily equal more work and complexity. There is a reason the supermarket has taken over from people going to 5 different little shops for their food.

EU doesn't agree with you.

I mean, obviously not or I wouldn't be commenting in this thread :p

Governments are well known for being completely stupid when it comes to technology and the viability of their ideas on it. When Facebook were in front of congress in what I think was the aftermath of the cambridge analytica scandal it was like a parody of out of touch geriatrics. They didn't even understand the first thing about the very issue they were responsible for trying to moderate.

I love how my wife's iphones always become magically incapable of holding a charge every two years too.

It doesn't. You're imagining that. I had my last iPhone for nearly 4 years and replaced the battery after about 3 and a bit.

Every time a completely new version of the OS is updated the phone might suck up a bit more battery while it reindexes and generally performs various actions in the background the battery doesn't suddenly become ****. The fact plenty of people have their iPhones for 4 or more years should tell you that.

Over time your battery will degrade and the demands of the OS will increase which again, will reduce the battery life of older phones but its nothing nefarious despite what people love to think.

The bigger question is, how many hammer their battery with quite a bright screen setting? Then you've got all the other little trinkets running in the background that doesn't need to always run hammering it.
