The end of the walled garden?

America wants to keep walled gardens.
EU doesn't.
America is bigger.
EU loses.
GG.

Not that simple is it. If the EU says "these are the rules to operate here" then these tech companies have two options. Comply or lost hundreds of millions of customers and billions of dollars.

that's the simple version tho.

if tech companies have to pull out or nerf in the EU in some way,
then people get mad at their politicians,
then politicians cave in because all they care about is getting re-elected.

so .?.. people will just need to exhibit due diligence as we've been doing in the Windows/unix environment - just identify apps from legitimate sources...
nothing is preventing apple still blessing apps that have undergone their scrutiny, a two class ecosystem.
maybe need some parental authorisation mechanism on childrens phones, who will be naive about downloads..

How many apps do you need on a smartphone anyway , what's the churn rate -- on a mature laptop environment maybe install 4 programs a year.

I honestly don't see how the internet can function without it being a series of walled gardens as society doesn't operate in an open world and so the internet won't either.

90% of people are incapable of this. Let alone people who haven't grown up with computers. Ask people in this country what operating system is on their computer and half of them won't even know. The vast majority couldn't tell you what OS their phone uses.

And when companies can stick their apps on app store x and give away a 5% cut vs 20% on apple, where do you think that app will be?

Part of the reason Apple has done so well is because they take the view that people are stupid and can't be trusted. That they don't need to know about implementation details or the pros and cons of these 2 approaches. They just want something that does what they want and for it to be as simple and intuitive as possible. They don't want to be looking for app store x to download an app. They don't want to be changing settings to allow unchecked apps to run on their devices.

The thing is, the internet isn't a walled garden...for those who don't wish it to be. A huge number of people happily ringfence certain aspects of their life in an ecosystem that they like because they are either happy in their ignorance or they are simply happy with the tradeoffs. I'm a programmer and I am very aware of the limitations of iOS but I am more than happy to have those for the benefits they bring and the ease of use. I pay more for Apple hardware because I like the seamless integration between all my devices. I don't want that removed or convoluted for the sake of freedom I don't want.

In keeping thinking I buying an apple device but never had one before, is an the software 1, good 2, expensive or is there still opensource options?

There was a time before Brexit and the whole cookie thing that the Internet was quite unrestricted. Now today it feels like region based DVD players. Certain news sites and other sites dependant on where they're based, likely America. I remember due to my IP location they were blocking me viewing it under new rules. I cannot remember what it said but there was a white page with a text blocking message due to EU and Brexit changes that I saw somewhere back in 2020.

Even Youtube sometimes locks you out these days based on your region, very rare though but it's starting to happen more and more. Where as in the 2000s it felt like a new exciting world. There were no restrictions unless you were behind paywalls.

even the bona fide apps have issues ... supposedly parents were unable to prevent child re-downloading app, or blocking access to chat rooms it uses, during ongoing grooming
Before Covid the US gaming platform Roblox was one of many online games children played. Following lockdown and millions of children isolating at home, the company now has a market value of $22bn and is the most popular gaming platform for British children. But is the platform doing all it can to protect them? Concerns have been raised about financial exploitation, grooming, gambling and access to inappropriate content.

This sort of rule is anti-competitive.

We do exist in an open world, and you are free to compete, before apple it was nokia, what comes after i dont know.

The EU doesn't like things it cannot completely control or have unfetted access to.

Communist mentality is very prevalent, that is the issue, its not about control.

I can see over several posts that you have some sense, but keep in mind you are responding to communists who have none.
