Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas now wants mandatory standards that will allow the average car to emit just 120 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilometre. That would mean a 1.6 litre petrol Ford Focus would need to cut emissions by a third to qualify as an average vehicle under the new regime.

That's the end of high-performance engines then.

The benefits of being in the EU

The EU sucks!!

Boo the EU

Looks like the Prices of Euro beasts will go up down here again :(

/Looks at and hugs japan

And that's why this is another hare-brained scheme that will never work. Utterly ludicrous.

they've been trying this for years

not going to happen,

too much money in the performance car market and i'm not just talking tuning,

nearly all manufacturers offer a hotted up version of their motors and they dont do it out of the kindness of their hearts theres money in them thar hot hatches

so what, they want us all to drive 1.1 micras and fiestas that cant even make it up a hill fully laden....hmm

and i thought cars actually made up a minimal level of emissions globally anyway

Mr Dimas wants people to wage war on climate change

Really?? Well lets look at the biggest contributors to CO2 then shall we?

Power Generation: 24%
Transport (including air, rail, car, ships) 14%
Industry: 14%
Heating: 8%
'Rotting waste': 3%

Don't see him cutting back on power generation, or other forms of transport, or even putting stricter rules for industry??

You can bet that Mr Dimas has a Toyota Prius that he drives in to make himself look good, but spends 90% of his time in some big engined Rolls/Bentley/Merc/BMW etc

*some bits stolen from foxs tree hugging carbon hippies thread*

I think this eu gimp should be tied between a rs4 avant and a m5 touring and pulled in half just like they used to do with horses in the old days :)

wonder how good this would be with a combined 1000 bhp :)

The EU should die.

^ Agreed.

Ludicrous idea, although I get the impression performance cars will still be available to buy (but of course the Govt will punish you day in day out for your repulsive, selfish and irresponsible attitude).

The day I retire - I'll be out of this country like it's on fire.

But if the country was on fire it will cause smoke to go in the Atmosphere and we all no smoke is bad for the environment and is full of CO2 or what not :p

I suspect a lot of people will leave for America if this happens, which it won't.

I can't see America granting a mass of green cards just because we can't have performance vehicles over here

That's stupid as didn't that recent "Stern report" say that cars contribute about 0.5% to global warming? The culprits they should be targetting is industry, aviation and global shipping.

If they just leave things alone and let market demand control it, everything would be okay. Rising fuel prices will cause more people to buy fuel efficient cars.

How much CO2 does a lightweight performance car like a Caterham or Lotus put out?

How the hell is this going to happen when Germany produce the fastest cars in the world?

Porsche, Mercedes, BMW etc etc

If I can't buy my dream 911 turbo when I'm older because of some sodding EU regulation then I'll be damned :D

Agreed, once again it is the general public who fall victim to one of EU's proposals. Same thing happens with tax increments.

Meh no great loss. With all the technological advancements and improvements in efficiency with petrol engines a 1.6 petrol Focus still only gets similar fuel economy to a 50 year old Ford Pop and worse in town.

About time someone did something about that.

Tell me somthing new. Old news tbh. If it happens it probably wont be in our time, and even if it did, technology would have moved on enough to make it a reality,

Cool... didn't realise my Focus was a performance car... vroom vroom! :D ;)
