The EU wants to make performance cars illegal

Meh no great loss. With all the technological advancements and improvements in efficiency with petrol engines a 1.6 petrol Focus still only gets similar fuel economy to a 50 year old Ford Pop and worse in town.

About time someone did something about that.

The Focus is pretty dire really as it weighs a whopping 1400kg which is utterly ridiculous for the size of the car. However, once again we have the EU to thank for the bloated weight of modern cars as saftey requirements are now so strict, so they are giving out conflicting requirements.

It'll never happen. The Germans wouldn't allow it :)

If it comes down to it, you might start to see more cars use similar systems to US carmakers in order to get average emissions and fuel consumption down - shutting off cylinders when loafing around, gearboxes that skip gears to keep the revs low etc. Around town, or once up to speed on a motorway, you don't really need all the cylinders in your Focus or 3 series BMW or Volvo estate banging away. I'm sure they could design such a system in quite cheaply and make it work well.

Alternatively, we could all just keep driving old cars. Cars that don't have legislators' fingerprints all over them to quite the same extent!

Tell me somthing new. Old news tbh. If it happens it probably wont be in our time, and even if it did, technology would have moved on enough to make it a reality,
This story is not old news. The idea maybe but not this story.

One trumped up official from the EU says something and suddenly the whole of the EU "wants to make performance cars illegal"?

Talk about a straw man, knee jerk reaction  I can see the daily mail tomorrow using that title.

I cant see anyone taking notice tbh, these environmentalist hippy's have always been trumpeting on about nonsense like this. Its clearly a head in the clouds first bid.

Just because one minister wants this doesn't mean the whole of the EU do, some people need to get a grip, just because this guy wants it then doesn't mean its gonna happen.
Well duh? Everyone realises that I would have thought. It's just the principle that someone who is in a position to influence the real decision makers is feeding them with stupid and pointless ideas.

Congratulations mr Comissioner, you've singlehandledly proposed to kill of the European car market in one stroke of your pen (assuming you do actually know how to write)...

I hope the rest of the see sense and tell this guy to go straight to hell, not pass go and not collect 200 euros...

Exactly. This would destroy the German automotive industry - they just don't really do small cars. The Germans have too much influence on the EU stage for this to be able to pass through.

Don't worry about it.

I dont have a problem with it. If it comes into force, car manufacturers will find ways around it.

That may mean hydrogen fuel cells, or hybrids, or something else. Either way, I dont think it'll destroy performance cars. Just change them.

Import cars will probably just come 'restricted' to meet EU emissions. I can see a big business in de-restrictor kits. :p

These rules say that average car that each manufacturer makes must only emit 120g/km. That means that Ford are OK because provided they sell enough Kas and Fiestas with tiny engines, they can still sell Ford GTs. What about manufacturers that only make bigger or more powerful cars? Surely all the big engined Mondeos across the EU kick out more CO2 than all the Ferraris combined? So why kill them off?

It's not that I'm against reducing CO2 output, but this is one of the most stupid ideas I've seen to tackle it.

The EU should die.

I suspect a lot of people will leave for America if this happens, which it won't.
Do you know what emission laws in the US are like? They are actually pretty strict iirc.
