The F1 2014 season

The BBC are reporting:

"It looks like there is going to be a tweak to qualifying this year, to prevent the scenario of some teams not running in the top 10 shoot-out in order to save tyres for the race. F1's strategy group - the new rule-making body, effectively - has proposed that those in Q3, as it is called, get an extra set of 'option' tyres for use only in that session.

"Drivers will now have to start the race on the set of tyres on which they set their best time in the second part of qualifying. The teams' sporting directors were asked if there were any major problems with the idea and when they met on Friday they agreed that while they had a couple of minor comments, there were no big issues and it would do what was intended. So expect that to be formally adopted as a rule at the next strategy group meeting on Friday."

Sounds like an improvement but still a bizarre way of doing it.

Personally I'd say 'A Driver that does not complete a lap in Q3 within ten percent of their fastest time in Q2 will be start from the pitlane, with the exception of mechanical failure at the sole discretion of the FIA Technical representative.'

They should just make separate qualifying tires so teams dont have to worry about it imo.

Yeah, the start-on-your-tyres thing is just artificial rubbish. I wonder whether the new rules will lead to more interesting tactical tyre decisions in Q2? Will we see top teams risking running on the harder tyre in Q2 to start the race on their preferred compound?

Scrap qually altogether, start them in reverse championship order and run 2 races per weekend (one on sat and another on sun) to make up for the reduction in track time. We'll soon see who can race and it should keep the championship nice and tight all season long

That's always been the solution to me, but it will never happen. F1 is all about the 'event' and that is Sunday.

You'd need to sort out other things such as if someone was going to finish 11th place, then decided to DNF so they could start on pole the next race.

Oh, that would be just odd though. Prize for winning WDC? Start at the back every race. What would happen for driver changes such as Ricciardo taking Webber's place? Why should he start near the back every time for a different team? Just playing devils advocate :)

Nah, first race is based on last season, every other race is based on current standings. Hence it will make it less likely that anyone would establish a massive lead

Nice idea.
