The Falklands thread

Sooner or later if we don't give it up it will be taken by force. The UK is pretty much at its peak power and development, whereas the South American countries can only become stronger over time.

Even if this claim is true, it is no reason to abandon British citizens to a country that no ownership rights whatsoever to the territory.

lol Venezuela. That's cute, quite endearing really. Keep at it guys, someday you'll be able to beat 'em.

California used to belong to Mexico...

so what

the point is that California and the Falklands are somewhat economically and geographically different, I'm not arguing about the rights and wrongs.

We did after all return Hong Kong to China.

I'm just highlighting how ridiculous it is so suggest all territory ever colonised is handed back. California is a good example of what its daft.

We did after all return Hong Kong to China.

Because we leased it from China didn't we? It was never actually ours properly.

He's quoted as saying they would fight alongside Argentina if Britain attacked. What would he do if Argentina attacked?

Either spin it that the Brits attacked the Argintinians who were just taking back what was rightfully theirs, or much more likely, remind people it was only if the nasty Brits attacked...

I can't see the British forces starting anything on purpose, however it wouldn't be the first time that one country has done something silly to provoke another into firing (Argentinian jets on "exercises"for example ignoring ATC and flying low could potentially cause anti air defenses to be employed if it looked like an attack run).

...ah, Hugo 'those americans have a cancer ray' Chavez. What will he say next? The moon is made of cheese? That argentina didn't make lots of innocent civilians 'disappear'?

Don't worry, Hugo, I'm sure we can stretch to attending to your navy with one of our submarines, too. :p

Iirc, returning Hong Kong to china was because our lease expired? Or some such thing. Such a lease with the falkland islands and argentina does not exist.

I remember 1982 very well. I built some of the stuff that apparently went down with the Arctic Conveyor.
Cameron could really do with a good, quick, easily winnable war just now, to get all the union flags waving again. It would be a sure fire way to get elected again.
It would be political suicide for Dave to enter into negotiations about giving the Islands back.

That was my thinking too. Plus, HK probably has a population that is 90% Chinese. I'm willing to bet that the population of the Falkland's is made up of less than a couple of percent of Argentines.

Its all ridiculous. At what time in history are we going to say "there, thats your lot, you have what you have now and no more". Nearly every country in the world has changed hands many times over the last few thousand years.

On a related note, wasn't Chavez the one that that said "I'm not 100% about this, but I'm pretty sure the west is giving South American leaders cancer"

I beleive the actual figure is 0%.

The British position is that it is up to the people who live there. If they decided they wanted negotiations, they'd get them.
