The Falklands thread

While I know the 45's are good and british built, but we should have bought Ageis ships from the US, half the price of a 45 and much much more mission capable.

Half the price doesn't mean much when all that money is going straight to the states, with the 45 being UK built the money comes back round through UK workers, workers who spend money and pay taxes here rather then a massive donation to the American economy for less capable ageing hulks.

I think we're going about it the right way. If we had 2 carriers right now, we couldn't use them anyway as we'd have no boats decent enough to defend them.

Start small, first the submarines, then the Type 45s and work up to the bigger stuff.

The submarines provide all the defence our boats need against enemy boats/subs. That's why destroyers like the Type 45 are mostly focused on air superiority.

Sean Penn should return his Malibu estate to the Mexicans
By Tim Stanley

I’d like to make a statement about the growing crisis in the Americas. It’s time for justice. It’s time for liberty. It’s time to end the ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology. It’s time Sean Penn handed his Malibu estate back to the Mexicans.
Sean Penn pretends to be a friend of the developing world, but really he is not. To be fair, his recent call for the Falkland Islands to be returned to Argentina was an admirable strike against capitalist imperialism. Moreover, I and the entire North Korean press corps cheered him on when he flew to Iraq to parley with Saddam Hussein, or when he spoke about Hugo Chavez in such glowing terms. But there have always been hints that his sympathy isn’t really with the workers at all. Aside from that time that he spent 32 days in prison for hitting an extra, his net worth of an estimated $150 million is a bit of a giveaway.
His continued occupation of Malibu is an unacceptable mockery of national self-determination. The Mexicans owned that stretch of real estate well into the early 19th century and it was stolen by the Americans in a naked act of imperialist aggression. America’s claim over Malibu is tenuous and rooted in patriarchy. Sean Penn’s house is a mocking reminder of that brute chauvinism, with its high white walls and spacious interiors. Its swimming pool is an insult to the honour of the Mexican people.
Now, I know that some will say that the Mexicans never actually lived on Sean Penn’s estate. But how many of them have worked there? Think of the maids, the cleaners, the butlers, the pool boys, the cooks, the gardeners. Think of the sweat that has dripped pouring Martinis, or the blood that was spilt pruning the roses. Truly, Sean Penn’s estate is part of Aztlan.
If diplomatic discussions break down, who could blame Mexico for resorting to military action to reclaim Mr Penn’s estate? Not I. Some might say that it would be an act without legal sanction or genuine historical cause. But that’s not the point. The people of Mexico want Sean Penn’s estate, so they should have it. Because stealing stuff from the rightful owners is the only way to combat colonialism.

It's key that with the Type-26 that they sell plenty of them to other markets to keep the per-unit cost down of each ship, I think we sold a few Type-23's and Type-42's to other countries but it's pretty cut throat, much like the Arms sale to India with Europe v France. I'm sure a few skirmishes where the BAE ships hold their own would secure a few sales :p

Argentina's best warship is one of our old Type 42's

I'm starting to think Mr Penn is the biggest troll ever:

Sean Penn calls Prince William's deployment to Falkland Islands 'unthinkable'

Sean Penn has continued his attack on Britain over the Falkland Islands, calling the Duke of Cambridge's deployment "unthinkable".

The Hollywood actor accused Britain of insensitivity for sending Prince William to the disputed islands claimed by Argentina.

Speaking in Uruguay having met President Jose Mujica, Penn repeated his assertion made in Argentina on Monday that Britain's stance over the Falklands was "colonialist, ludicrous and archaic".

"My oh my, aren't people sensitive to the word colonialism, particularly those who implement colonialism," said the double Oscar winner.

"It's unthinkable that the United Kingdom can make a conscious decision to deploy a prince within the military to the Malvinas, knowing the great emotional sensitivity both of mothers and fathers in the United Kingdom and in Argentina who lost sons and daughters in a war of islands with a population of so few.

There are many places to deploy the prince. It's not necessary, when the deployment of a prince is generally accompanied by warships, to send them into the seas of such shared blood."

Prince William is spending six weeks on the islands as part of another "routine deployment" in his role as Flight Lieutenant Wales, an RAF search-and-rescue helicopter pilot.

arrive wearing "the uniform of a conqueror".

Penn, a champion of left wing causes, said he was proud of the alliance between America and Britain, but insisted on "the need for Argentina and Britain to negotiate the sharing of the islands' natural resources".

In a meeting with Argentine president Cristina Kirchner on Monday, Penn referred to the islands "the Malvinas Islands of Argentina" and said Britain should entered into a UN-sponsored dialogue over their sovereignty.

"The world today is not going to tolerate any ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology," he said during the meeting in Buenos Aires.

Veterans of the Falklands, which Penn calls the Malvinas Islands of Argentina, said the comments were "moronic" given his lack of knowledge or connection to either Britain or Argentina.

Tory MP Patrick Mercer, a former Army officer, told the Daily Mail: "What on earth has this got to do with Sean Penn? He's neither British nor Argentine and seems to know nothing about the situation judging by this moronic statement.

"A good number of his movies have been turkeys, so I suppose we shouldn't expect much better coming out of his mouth."

It emerged on Tuesday that a delegation of MPs will visit the Falkland Islands next month, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the conflict, in a move likely to further inflame tensions with Argentina.

Members of the Commons defence select committee are expected to visit the Mount Pleasant garrison and air force base and commemorate the servicemen who died in the 1982 conflict.

"Given that we have a significant military presence in the Falklands ... it is only right that the defence committee goes and sees first – hand what taxpayers' money is being spent on," said Thomas Docherty, a Labour MP on the committee.

Argentina has received the backing of Latin American countries for its claim of sovereignty over the remote, wind-lashed islands, which were occupied by Britain in 1833.

The dispute erupted into warfare April 2, 1981 when Argentine troops seized the islands, only to be routed in a 74-day war that claimed the lives of 649 Argentines and 255 Britons.

Diplomatic friction between Argentina and Britain has intensified since 2010, when the Government authorised oil exploration in the waters near the islands.

This really stood out

So basically he's been talking to them and the Argies have been moaning they want the oil, i don't think they've ever admitted before that they only want the island for it's oil............

Reading this thread has made me realise that we need a military sub-forum!

I've thought this for a while and mentioned it a few times.

The 'British Military' thread is great, but it's mainly banter and people talking about applications and what's happening etc.

It would be nice to have something for military hardware discussions. If the demand is there...

Good spot.

I think the Argies have inadvertently alluded to the oil any time they bring up the subject of the South American "basin" and tectonic plates etc etc. These words certainly appear in any oil exploration handbook. It can't have any other meaning either because to suggest that only one country can occupy a geographic basin or plate would be ludicrous...

Why do I often read on articles that the Falklands war took place in 1981?

Was it not 2 April – 14 June 1982?

Am I missing something?

Penn is a bell end, if if was nominated for a BAFTA the champagne quoffing tool would still have accepted it. Sean Penn needs working over with a hammer and a blow torch tbh

The Times reported that the visit had sparked anger from Argentine veterans.

The president of their association, Juan Mendicino, told the newspaper: "Argentina does not want war. It wants peace and the return of our islands through diplomatic negotiation. But the only thing that the English think about is war.

"We don't want visitors from your Parliament. We want the UN to intervene as it has done in disputes across the world."

yes peace like these same veterans tried in 1982 ??

Also if we buy off the shelf from the US, it leaves our defence companies, for example BAE, with no major orders. If they have no major orders they can't maintain their status among the best in the world.

Neglecting our own defence industry affects their ability to produce the things we might need in future conflict. You can't rely entirely on another nation for materials during a major war.

You could argue that a healthy defence industry is perhaps a greater asset than any number, or capability of destroyers.

whose the girl in the sig...
