The Falklands thread

^^ good petition!

Not really, Aid is another word for trade bribes, if we'd had a bit more Aid for India we might have sold some Euro fighters, instead of the Frenchies selling them their older stuff. It's a drop in the ocean for us and if it bring in business then it pays for its self.

Aid towards Argentina is different and I agree it should stop or at least be curtailed. We do have obligations under the UN and EU to loan money but we need to put pressure on at least (I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't already happening), unless Argentina do pay their debts, in which case why not make some money of their back? We did the same with Ireland.

Also the IMF also don't accept Argentina's inflation figures :p

It wouldn't have helped, the French stuff is just to make do with until the new T-50's their joint developing with Russia (mostly Russia) arrive, if anything we may have got an opportunity to sell them some old Tornadoes but no Typhoons (they cost more than the T-50 will).

But the Indians saw our 'aid' for what it was, an attempt to buy influence with them, even as their economy powers ahead of ours. We were even told at one point that they didn't want it, IIRC an Indian official described it as "Chicken Feed", but our government insisted they take it anyway, in essence leaving us subsidizing their space and nuclear programs, while they went ahead and bought French anyway.

From the BBC:

Most military thinkers agree they offer the only credible threat through a surprise attack on Mt Pleasant. One scenario might be a civilian airliner packed with special forces to divert to Mt Pleasant, says Colonel Southby-Tailyour. "It would take a very brave politician to shoot down a civilian airliner in cold blood. The Argentine forces are good. They could jump out and shoot everything up."

Today:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17227792

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez says she wants to renegotiate an agreement with the UK on flights to the Falkland Islands from South America.

The islands are currently served by weekly flights from Chile.

But Ms Fernandez said she wanted the air link to be operated by Argentina's state-owned airline direct from Buenos Aires.

Presumably so much like the port embargo she can then "switch it off".

I think not Cristina, go away, come back and try again when you've thought it through...

Silly person...

another roger waters interview and it becomes clear why he's so upset now.

Not really. Roger Waters has had a long history of opposition to our ownership of the Falklands.

He wrote an entire album pretty much about it. (The Final Cut - Pink Floyd in name but really a Roger Waters album)

I don't agree with him but at least he has been consistent in his views for 30 years or so.

Yeah, consistently thick. He's an idiot who not only does not know the first thing about Falkland Island history, he knows not the first thing about British history, either.

"I am as ashamed as I possibly could be of our colonial past... when we were out raping and plundering and stealing from everybody.
"That kind of imperialism is not something as an Englishman I am proud of."

Yes, Roger, all us Brits ever did was rape and pillage. That's it. All that law and administration and science and mathematics and technology and medicine and democracy and abolition of slavery and wealth and trade and generally quite well-done decolonisation, all that was magic that just happended purely by luck.

Just another champagne socialist.

Roger Waters (of Pink Floyd) has waded in on the side of Sean Penn

Another 'right-on' lefty liberal celebrity with no concept of the real world... Good job I can't stand Pink Floyd otherwise I'd boycott on principle.
I think you will find most educated "lefty liberals" strongly support the Falklands right to self-determination.

From a historical point of view Argentina does not have a valid claim over ours, so the only reasonable stance is one which recognises the local populations desires.

"I am as ashamed as I possibly could be of our colonial past... when we were out raping and plundering and stealing from everybody.
"That kind of imperialism is not something as an Englishman I am proud of." - This isn't somebody being a champaign socialist, it's somebody being an idiot.

The British/Spanish/French/Dutch who settled the region were ALL colonial invaders - the only difference is that the Falklands had no indigenous population, Argentina did.
