The Falklands thread

interesting to read that the US is asking the UK to stop voting through international aid to Argentina given they aren't paying their debts. Perhaps we ought to start signing this petition! http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/18323

Nice! Signed it.

I seriously, seriously doubt anything will come from this. It strikes me as a political ****ing contest. The Argentines are decades behind in military equipment and we Brits have condsiderbly stronger military presence in the Falklands now. It'd be an Argentinian disaster if they tried to invade, which, they logistically cannot.

Yeah, consistently thick. He's an idiot who not only does not know the first thing about Falkland Island history, he knows not the first thing about British history, either.

Yes, Roger, all us Brits ever did was rape and pillage. That's it. All that law and administration and science and mathematics and technology and medicine and democracy and abolition of slavery and wealth and trade and generally quite well-done decolonisation, all that was magic that just happended purely by luck.

Just another champagne socialist.

well put. People seem to forget the good things the empire did.

All you guys being mean to Rodger. Be nice, he has a little black book with his poems in!

lol he's also got a bag with a toothbrush and comb in :p

I love Pink Floyd but i hate Waters he's a big spoilt pretentious p****.
He's just trying to gain more ticket sales in south America.

It's a shame that this thread is now dominated by the opinions of celebrities.

I wonder what Ben Stiller thinks of the situation? Maybe Matt Damon can give us his views too...

Careful, there is a huge amount of rape and pillage that went on under the expansion of the British Empire that has been swept under the rug and is NOT taught at school, etc. theres a huge amount we should/could be ashamed of...

However whats done is done and doesn't really have any implications on the Falklands.

You mean rape and pillage like the vikings and japanese etc..

Thing with slavery is people don't realise more white slaves left our shores than any other race

Every empire or nation that has had the chance to expand, has subjugated other people. It has been the way of the world. And yet people don't blather on about how awful the Mongols were, or how the Romans went about getting their maim on. The British Empire is reviled by people around the world to this day simply because it was the last empire. Yes, bad things happened, but you don't need an empire to make bad things happen in this world, and the Empire brought a lot of good with it that echoes to this day.

Empires have traditionally ended in fire and war and collapse and ash. I think it's extremely telling that many parts of the old Empire still remain - voluntarily - attached to Britain and are happy to be part of things like the Commonwealth. For me, THAT is the litmus test.

Interesting article here about the French. Classic quote from Sir John Nott:

We asked Mitterrand not to give assistance to the Argentinians. If you're asking me: 'Are the French duplicitous people?' the answer is: 'Of course they are, and they always have been.'

:D
