The Falklands thread

You mean rape and pillage like the vikings and japanese etc..

Thing with slavery is people don't realise more white slaves left our shores than any other race

lol

Get Over it people do bad things, unlike some countries we have moved on from he middle ages and colonialism.

Every empire or nation that has had the chance to expand, has subjugated other people. It has been the way of the world. And yet people don't blather on about how awful the Mongols were, or how the Romans went about getting their maim on. The British Empire is reviled by people around the world to this day simply because it was the last empire. Yes, bad things happened, but you don't need an empire to make bad things happen in this world, and the Empire brought a lot of good with it that echoes to this day.

Empires have traditionally ended in fire and war and collapse and ash. I think it's extremely telling that many parts of the old Empire still remain - voluntarily - attached to Britain and are happy to be part of things like the Commonwealth. For me, THAT is the litmus test.

Don't quite get these replies as they aren't addressing the point I was making... yes theres nothing unique about the methods that went into the expansion of the British Empire but thats not what I was commenting on - neither was I denying or getting hung up on anything.

Suggest you re-read my post and the context of the post I quoted in regards to the post it was aimed at as your completely not getting the point I made.

why should we be ashamed of something some people did hundreds of years ago?

If you believe that then every person in the world should go around being constantly ashamed.

Exactly how I feel, I'm in no way responsible for my fore-fathers actions. I had some aboroiginals trying to peck my head about this a while ago, they got the same answer.

exactly. we don't hold modern Germany responsible for WWII/ the Nazis, and that was much more recent.

why anyone should be bothered about "our" conduct in the days of Empire is beyond me.

personally ashamed? haha, not likely.

Anyone just watch the program on the falklands? Seems like we were lucky to get them back according to the program.

No, I will be watching it in the coming days. I can guess how it went, though.

No doubt luck did play a part on both sides, but nothing can be taken away from the Royal Navy. It was an incredible feat given the circumstances.

Unexploded bombs - Was that luck? or was it down to the fact that the Argentines had not maintained their ordinance properly, and their aircraft were dropping them from below the effective altitude. Really, it was more a case of low standards than luck.

And the reason they were dropping below the effective altitude was that they knew that the missile systems aboard many of the RN ships would have taken a heavy toll if they had not used the islands to mask their approach. A combination of incorrect fusing and a healthy respect for our air defenses.

Just watched it now.

I didn't like it much. It was very vague and subjective to fit their 'potential disaster' theme. There are several far far better documentaries on the Falklands war.

I enjoyed some of the interviews though.

Nice piece on the Guardian's website about the Falklanders view, written by a member of the Falklands legislative assembly: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/mar/06/no-one-listen-falkland-islanders

Good points about self determination and flatly refuse Argentina's claim to the islands.
Most of the Argentinian intelligentsia are arguing this exact point against the PM on the issue (but are being ignored) - the reasonable/intelligent Argentinians are embarrassed by this whole affair.

Just watched the video on the bbc in the above link and i'm complete confused at what President Fernandez speech is going on about. My view is that the Falklands are British as long as the people want it to be. They have been now for over 170 years and Fernandez reason banging on about our colonial way is complete non sense. Just wondering if im missing something here as her speech to me just seems to be a pile of crap with random filling statements that dont explain anything. Maybe the translation is terrible and im missing something.

So what do you all think..
