The Final Frontier.

I'd hope that we can, but I'm not sure that all the suitable technologies could be created by just one company, no matter whether they had government funding or not, I think that it would be easier if companies pooled their resources, including scientists. Also the possibility of it ever becoming useful is again related to what is found outside the solar system and the speeds achieveable onboard.

Under our current understanding of the laws of physics, there is no way to travel at a speed greater than that of light. However the "laws" of physics are really just our current best estimates of how our universe behaves (except maybe for electromagnetism) and I would like to think that we will find ways around special relativity in the future.

As many have pointed out, even if we could travel at the speed of light, it would still take too long to get anywhere.

But there is nothing stopping you going around it. Using things like wormholes. Or using generational ships/cryostasis. There will always be adventurers who would leap at such missions.

Or making us live longer.

100 years human life, could be extended to thousands one day.

The next big adventure is exploring and colonizing the solar system. That will be a massive undertaking and would see the number of humans increase by a factor of 10. Obviously such an undertaking would lead to an extremely technologically dependent lifestyle out there.

During such a colonization which would take 100-200 years, many of the technologies needed for safe long distance travel to other stars would be developed.

With any luck by then theoretical physicists will have found a few holes in modern theory so that journeys to stars won't take life times. But that may simply not be possible.

Well we have managed to teleport some part of an atom across a laboratory so I don't see it being all that long until greater things come to the fore, especially when the LCH goes back online in September.

A great time to live....

Till the collider generates a black hole and royally screws us all.

no that's quantum teleportation the original atom never moves and continues to exist all they had done is than another atom and impart the quantum properties of the first (spin etc) atom onto it.

It all depends on whether or not some form of FTL travel is possible, because frankly the idea of cryo-stais or generational ships just doesn't appeal. And without that, space is just too damn big to be explored in human-scale lifetimes.

Think big. Within 30-40 years I should think it'll be possible to make a computer at least as intelligent as a person. Then you can fire them off to wherever you like. If you really want biological people you can grow some once you arrive.

No. The distances are too far, so journeys would take too long.

So? cry stasis or generational ships. al you gotta do is get enough stuff there to start building a colony that can be self sufficient and it will grow on it;s own.

well we'll have to see what the voyager probes encounter as they leave the solar system and if they can survive it.
Voyager 1 is already a long way past Pluto and the last natural objects in the solar system. Over the next decade or so it will have to start shutting down it's systems one by one as the power it's reactors can generate diminishes. It's almost a bit sad that we'll lose contact with the furthest object we've ever made.

Maybe one day we'll pass it :)

I mean passinth through the heliosphere etc

I certainly believe we will achieve it. The human race is constantly striving for expansion, and is capable of succeeding at anything, it just requires the right attitude. As to how soon, it could be a short time, it could be a long time. Lets get it right on Earth though before we fire ourselves into space.
