The future of Aion

The end game in MMO's always require groups now, because of this stupid class sets.

UO although fantastic in groups you could also play solo, they didn't force you to group.

Thats because UO was awesome in that it didnt have an "endgame", in those days MMOs didnt have a point at which you had "ended". Its these horrible newer MMOs which have generated this whole "endgame" concept

My problem not sure if any agree was not the grind it was the solo grind. Back in FFXI days i loved the fact you could only get to lvl 20 solo just enough time to grasp your class then it was hardcore party leveling for years:) the fact that you had to talk to other people have a conversation and a laugh was fantastic you had to be social. Yeah we have guilds but there not the same there always the groups of click in every guild is the way it goes. hope aion come somewhere near untill ffx1v online :p

I suspect we won't see true party-based MMOs for a while. They all want to be "solo-friendly" and "accessible", which means they are all falling over themselves to allow solo to be a valid option all the way through the game, even up to end-game.

We won't see another EQ or FF11 (where grouping is mandatory) for yonks.

Im kinda hoping FFXIV will have this. D&D Online has lost a lot of the pen and paper feel from when I started playing 3 years ago or so... So much of the game is easy to solo...

Downloading now...

Trial is very limited though. 3 Days or 5 hours of game time, and can only play to lvl 7 (before you get wings!! arrghh!).

How is that anyway to try out an MMO.... hmm.

It's possibly so you don't realise how limited the wings are. Gliding in most zones only, very limited flight times in the others. I was really hoping for a proper 'flying' mmo, but they seemed afraid to actually go the whole way towards doing that.

I was just hoping for something a little different to DDO, tbh. Korean Grindfest here I come :P

My bet is I last the trial and don't want to play lol!

But it would be nice to see an MMO actually use my rig's potential.

Really? I've had to party for every dungeon I've been in after the newbie island and most of the harbour. I suppose I could have turned the difficulty levels down. Rogue btw.

Back to Aion... I think I could only play this game again if the word "nyerk" and the shugo race were removed entirely. I've never understood the desire for mounts in a game where you can fly, and check out the rocking-horse symbol there, it looks ridiculously out of place in a game world that's supposed to be dark and war torn.

I always did like the OTT animations though.

ganking is still a big issue in this game folks, trust me.

I know because today, I went to patamor thicket where all the level 24's were grinding and pwned them. Then they started crying in /3 and some level 50's came and busted me up. FML

regardless, you will get ganked now and then, but when you call some higher levels to help you, since they have nothing better to do (due to the lack of endgame content) they'll come running.

Going and ganking in enemy territory was one of the things I liked best about the game. Though ganking isn't really accurate I suppose when you enemy are only 5lvl's or so lower but still as I was playing a sorc it could feel abit cheap sometimes, right up to the point where a decent lower lvl ranger raped me.
Tbh, I might go back soon and lvl my sorc up more (only about lvl35), as I'm not playing any mmo atm, and I've got some spare time these days to play (lack of spare time was one of the main reasons I left aion in the first place).

I am also looking at:
Mortal Online (bugs and all) as I love FFA pvp (AoC was great for this even if it was unbalanced, unfinished),
DDO as it's free to play and the combat from what I've seen doesn't look too bad (I'd want to play a Sorc or Wizard)
and LOTRO as it's going F2P soon so I might be tempted to give that a go though you can only pvp in one area from what I'm aware and I'm not sure how good pvp actually is in the game anyhow.

Well, finished my Trial (5 hours playtime, boo!), thought I'd post some feedback - Lvl'd both a Scout and Mage upto the max available lvl 7 and explored the starter areas.

First - Its a WoW clone. The general Combat system, quest styles, general stuff to do - its all WoW.

Combat - Chains are interesting but limited. Otherwise, its the formulaic double click to attack and sit back and press a skill every now and again.

Crafting - The usual gather/craft. Nothing unusual here.

Quests - *Yawn* I have to kill how many of X?...

I got my missus to play it as well, and although its quite pick up and playable easy stuff (she played a Mage as well), she got bored afteran hour and didn't want to play anymore.

So what did I actually like?

Character Creation - The customisation of your characters look is nothing short of amazing.

Class system - The specialisation of a general class is a neat idea.

Wings - Never got to see them, but I don't think any other MMO has wings and lets you fly....

Graphics - This is what drew me in initially to even try Aion, the graphics are nothing short of amazing for an MMO.

PvP - Nothing like a bit of player vs. player to liven things up a bit.

So will I be playing?

Sadly, no. I love eastern themed MMOs (I played 2moons for a good while), but I hate grind combined with really boring content. The WoW clone combat system doesn't work for me either, as thats just enhances the boredom.

Personnally I'd say your selling it short calling it a wow clone however I can see where your getting that from. Movement, turn-based combat etc.
However unfortunately due to the severely limited trial that you have been given you really can't get to experience much. Most if not all classes are rather boring and run of the mill until atleast lvl10 when they get to choose a their sub class, and even then most classes still don't really liven up until your about lvl20.
And then there's the fact you need to be lvl25 to get into the Abyss to check that out.

It is however a grindy mmo, but at the same time it can be a bit more challenging than most. Personnally I think the game has potential (assuming up coming patches include what they promise and come out quickly), but then I also said that about Age of Conan (which if they ever managed to make it smooth, fluid and remotely balanced it still could be great).

I'm certainly not disagreeing with all your points and infact I'm, more pointing out that the trial they offer is next to uselss. Why couldn't they just give a normal 5-10 day trial for the game like most MMO's do. That way players would have a chance at seeing the game open up and be able to tell if it over comes the short comings found at the early stages of the game.
