The future of computing, will iOS replace Mac OS in 5-10 years?

Whats funny is hearing the windows fan boys saying that windows is just as easy to use as OSX.

They havent a clue !

Apple excelling at what it does best - making things easy for end users.

To be honest I use both every day and don't see what OS X does that makes things so much easier. Drag and drop install for most (smaller?) applications is great but what else is there?

Could you list some? I'm genuinely interested as I'm still getting to grips with the OS, had my MacBook for about 3 weeks now.

Edit: What really impressed me was that my MacBook detected our networked printer and installed the drivers instantly, it detected the postscript drivers on the printers hard drive and it was all done. Windows however faffed me about and I had to install drivers that were for another printer in the end, but still allow us to print/scan.

Lets not go down the Windows vs OSX road.

I think the closest we'll get to iOS on Mac is the replacement of FrontRow with the AppleTV version of iOS. That might be a Lion feature worth talking about.

.

the fact you have 15,000 posts on here means this doesn't surprise me.

try getting your nan to use both from scratch with 0 prior experience and see the difference ;)

For the record - i dont find either hard to use. But i do IT support professionally, so i'm bound to find it easier. I am not a yardstick you'd use to judge how easy an O.S. is to use.

IS apple going to abolish selling software on DVD? I assume they will as they will want to charge triple for using the program store...

If they do that, then I'm going to windows. My internet is to slow to download loads of GB's for iLife, MS office etc etc etc

How long did it take you to think up that excuse for a dramatic gesture?

Don't be daft, they'd get hit with a ton of bricks if they suddenly blocked Microsoft and co from selling DVDs.

Who buys software on DVD in this day and age?

me, my line is too slow.

EDIT: When I hear "app store" I automatically fear lack of competition, outrageous pricing and apple ruling the app store with an iron fist, much like itunes and there iphone store thingy.

The Mac App Store is an option for software (and for most people that makes sense) but for people who need more niche apps they will be available via the old install method.

As for DVDs well I doubt they will go away for all apps, after all 50GB for Final Cut Studio would not be a nice download!

You'd have to be buying Apple-made DVDs very frequently (for some reason) for downloads to be more than a minor annoyance.

Big downloads are already par for the course with the OS point releases.

From Anandtech''s iPad 2 review:

"The question I have to ask is whether tablets based on smartphone hardware and OSes are going to become powerful enough to double as portable PCs or are desktop OSes going to become lightweight and efficient enough to run on smartphone class tablet hardware? The latter seems to be Microsoft's strategy with Windows 8. Unify the software and allow it to run on all platforms, while the former is where Apple is presently headed with the iPad. It's clear to me that convergence between desktop and ultra mobile OSes will happen at some point, I'm just unsure which side will lead the merger."

Im still convinced thats where its going. Cant wait to see how ios 5 will expand on things.

When will you be able to develop iOS applications from conception to submission inside iOS?

Nah, they need to keep their "truck" OS for development and other heavy lifting even if normal consumer demand for it fades.

+1 iOS will be for end users and OSX for IT pros

It is rumored that the next iMac range will have fully tilt-able screens and will be touch capable so they can be folded down flat and worked on like that. To be honest that sort of tech leaves me cold, so does simple. I much prefer desktops as they are.

Your post however just keeps banging on about iOS when all the smart money is going on Android as the dominant platform. Tablets will be raining down on us by this time next year, the majority of which will be powered by Android and will be a hell of a lot cheaper and more functional than an iPad.

Thats an interesting thought, but I seem to recall that they considered the angle of conventional screens to be non-condusive to working. ie knackered hand syndrome!

I agree with TheHeyes, though, I do think there will be more and more similarities between MacOS and iOS... but lets not forget, there already are!

I'll watch this thread with interest...

I think this is highly likely as time goes on and IOS gets more and more functionality it will start crossing the boundary. However I can't see a full OS going anywhere soon, due to the business world.

I agree...

iOS and OSX will come very close as they see what works and what doesn't on each platform, however, they will never merge and take over.

OSX will always have the edge over iOS and that is how they will sell it should they wish. Just as they have the macbook and macbook pro, you want more performance... go for the macbook pro... you want more performa go for OSX.

The most it will ever be is a choice (if it happens at all)
