i decided to start this thread to talk about the future of gaming in the next say 20-50yrs

i think in that 30yrs gaming will be taken to holographic platforms about say 2-5m square

yes there are holographic projectors bieng used today when designing cars, i know that ford have 2 (imagine wot it could do for prn;))

good bye gtx260, hello gtxxxX2 01260

tbh it would be bad enough explaining to the wife why im viewing porn on my own without also having to hide the shimmering holographic beauty behind some books

I predict in 20-50yrs time I wont need games cause I'll actually be able to fly the star ship enterprise for myself.

in about 10 years time 3d graphics that look 100% life like, maybe a few years earlier on high end pcs. then 5 to 10 years after that some kind of virtual reality that looks good, i guess they'd use a similar thing to the wii with more advanced sensors and holograms appearing infront of you like the op said, but to get them looking as good as completely lifelike 3d graphics on a screen might take a while.

Lawnmower man:D

Universities in India and Australia (and others I expect) have for a long time been researching future gaming methods, like where you wear a hat an are then actually 'in game', no peripheral vision at all. I did have a go yonks ago when I went to London with a mate, crap game but nevertheless it made a difference.

Future of gaming?

We'll be playing Fallout 4 for real, once the Iranians and North Koreans plunge the world into a post-nuclear winter...

Is that glass half empty?

Reminds me of the 80s when movies were made where the Intros had "In the year 2010" ....

que flying cars and cities looking like what people still dream of 30 years later.

lol
and yes i do have room for a large holo platform,
well atleast until the living room gets furnished lol:D

imagine what it would do for rts games with everything really small like a tank the size of a bar of soap, and a soldier the same size as the micro-machines ones lol,
with planes flying over your head like giant flys.

or place a portable one outside ur house lol for Halloween and when the little kid steps to the door, a zombie appears next to him instantly lol:D

Oh yeah, I remember reading this article about not 'virtual reality' but 'augmented reality'. You wear VR goggles, but what you see and interect with for the most part is the real world, but on top of that, the goggles project game characters. In the example I saw it was quake, so you might be walking around you own house, with this gun thing in your hand, and you see a monster apear and then hide in the hallway and then you shoot it.

Ok, bad explanation, but basically it recognises the physical objects around you, and then projects additional content that interacts with the physical world. And the plus is that you actually have to run around, so you get expercise rather than sitting at a desk for hours.

Well theres that film coming out soon, cant remember the name, but a holodeck/fps where you actually control cons and go out and kill people :D

Can you imagine the power needed to run something like a holodeck, with the world going green and carbon footprint crazy I cant see it happening.

Plugging yourself in like MAtrix is a possibility or something similar. I think the Wii is something that will prove to be something that started off the next gen of gaming.

Then again.. Virtual Reality anyone ;)
