The future of lenses?

I was watching the first episodes of my Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex boxset last night and in episode 1 I saw that. I thought it was hilarious that they would write the lens info on an ocular implant but it did make me think. We have lenses the size of an eye in phones. How long till we do have implants like that available. How long till someone is shopping for an L glass eye?

The disadvantage would be, if you wanted a zoom lense - you're gonna have to get used to wearing them thick lens glasses. Spare milk bottles anybody?

I do remember seeing a medical programme 2 maybe 3 years ago where they were on about initial implants for this could be 10 years away, initially beginning with only a few colours, but you know how technology works - won't be long before people are running in 1024 resolution and 32 bit colour
