The future of PC gaming?

You are aware real life isn't rendered in polygons and texture maps?
A computer needs HUGE canvesses for realistic looking environments and characters, as a result it does need a resolution higher than that of TV. Saying TV looks real is a ridiculous statement, it's a compressed filming of a real life scene, not rendered on the fly like a game. Play any game on a CRT monitor in 640x480 or 1280x1024, the latter looks better every time.

Oh, and for your information, TV does not look real, you look at a TV picture and it does NOT look like you're there. HDTV pictures look a lot more realistic... why? It's less compressed and not forced into a low, regular TV resolution.

Until you realise the concept of just what games are doing every frame you'll understand just why games look like they do.

There are so many things wrong with this post that i don't know where to start really.

Comment 1:
Comment 2: No it doesn't. An Xbox360 on standard def TV has just as realistic graphics. They do not look as sharp or shiny but they look just as real. Ok, they do look "better" on a high def display but they do not look more "real". We are simply talking photo realistic graphics here.

Comment 3: For my information? Erm, you what? it does look extremely real because it is a 2D translation of actual events. It is a carbon copy of a 2D perspective of what happened, hence it looks real. It will never look like you are there, but where did i say that? Photographs look real, they are still 2D.

Comment 4: I understand perfectly well thank you and i stick by my comments.

Ray tracing will render a lot of cards graphical tricks null and void. HDR won't have to be faked, it will occur like it would in the real world. Effects do improve vastly with each generation but they do get subtler as we move forward. The polygon counts for models aren't leaping forward like they used to etc. In Crysis for example, the gun models will use a similar amount of polygons to those in FarCry, just slightly improved textures and the like.

I agree with no.1 for some developers, but others will still strive for better graphics. Ray-Tracing needs to come to term before we will see another huge jump imo.

I don't agree with 2, it is just less noticeable.

3 i strongly disagree with. Resolution has nothing to do with life like graphics. TV looks real and thats on a very low resolution. HD is a console catchphrase and is useless when talking about life like graphics. Polygon and pixel power is what matters.

4... as far as we want it to, see above.

I agree that ray-tracing will be the next big thing, I seem to remember an article about someone giving the quake 3 engine ray tracing in real time (which looked beautiful) so it shouldn't be too much longer until we have it in modern games :)
