I havent seen much gossip lately. I remember all the speculation with the x1800 vs 7800 and X800 vs 6800 threads.

Anyone have a clue about ATI and NV timelines?
I am a little intrigued to know if ATI will move to 20, 24 or perhaps the insane 32 pipes that where rumoured with the 1800 series :D
As the prices are relatively low for the high-end cards I would imagine yields are good and something new is due for release late spring/early summer.

speculation is ok! No NV vs ATI flamewar please :)

Ati are supposedly releasing the R580+ which is an 80nm die shrink of the current R580. It will probably have higher clock speed and is rumoured to have GDDR4
I can only assume the R600 has been put back as a result.

The R600 is still on track and doing fine. The reason they are doing the R580+ is just to bring out a refresh card to keep on the top spot. And so that they don’t mess up there usual release dates :D

EDIT: Sorry no I don’t have a source it was just something I was reading the other day on one of my internet readup frenzies.

ATI & nV will be going head to head with R600 & G80 respectively.

I believe that both cards will be built around a unified (in their own ways) architecture and will support DX10 (or WGF 2.0, however you want to term it).

They'll support Shader Model 4.0, and be GDDR4 ready too.

Likely to appear first on an 80 or 90nm process, although there is rumour that nV are working towards a 65nm G80 release which will make the silicon cheaper and consume less power / generate less heat / allow higher clocks.

We can probably expect cards based on R600 / G80 this year.

Anyone want to hazard a gues as to how much of the DX10 features current cards can run, or is it a fact that we need a DX10 card in order to get the benefit?

Yeah, I'd like to know more about that too. Apart from the speed bump we will see, does anyone have a list of things we can expect from DX10 that isn't going to be supported by DX9 cards - in terms of visual specifics?

So far all I have read about are a few effects from the Crytek engine that DX9 cards won't have - stuff I can honestly live without if faced with a graphics card upgrade yet again.

If what DP was saying a while back, they will be released at different times - the G80 will be released when the R580+ is released and then R600 will come in the release slot after that (i.e late Jan).
From what Ive been reading over beyond3d I got the impression that the R600 is a unified architecture where as the G80 will be unified at driver level and not hardware.
Not sure on SM4 -> but yeah GDDR4 support sounds like a safe bet (iirc the R520 and above already support it), although after the troubles nvidia had with high speed GDDR3 I would be surprised if the G80 came with it.
In terms of processes -> I would be surprised if nvidia managed to get a 65nm part out... they seem to be slightly behind ATI in die shrinking and I think Dave Orton just announced that the next range would be 80nm (high end) and 65nm (low end).... The R580+ should be a 80nm part - so that makes sense.

well looking at that on gamespot. gaming is now on its why back to the PC in full force :D i mean don't get me wrong i have a 360 and will have a PS3 and a REV. But roll on R600 XFIRE and a 30" DELL :D:D and DX 10 looks to be amazing couple that with the ultimate edition of Vista and. need i go on....

goes of to let imagination rome......

Thanks

Indeed, according to that GameSpot article,

"DirectX 10 will increase game performance by as much as six to eight times."

That's a massive increase. One I find hard to believe in fact.

Not backward compatible in hardware, but will be through software. It definately sounds like a hardware upgrade to get the full effect. I reckon my X1900XT will see me though it a bit, but if the quality difference is that high...
