The great HD rip off

reminds me of the energy companies here - gas prices are supposed to be higher and they charge us 40% more and then x amount of time later its learned they made record profits 40% over the previous quarter ... somehow doesnt make sense.

Perhaps it's because you RMA'ed at a bad time? Transferring over all those warranties and information over probably isn't easy and will slow them down.

Samsung RMA's with rexo have been real quick for me.
Seagate too, within a week I got a replacement drive after they received the faulty one.

I think your right, it was just a bad time to send the item back. I have used WD and Seagate RMA in the last 6 months. I RMA a media player back to WD, they were very good. They sent me a replacement media player out first, which also turned out to be the next model up.

Seagate their RMA looks like it will take 14 days, as my replacement is in transit with DHL. Though I did send my HD directly back to Holland and not to the UK RMA point, who then forwards the HD to Holland. Seagate are also sending me a sata 3 drive, my RMA drive was a sata 2 :)

Darn annoying these over inflated hd prices, must drop soon.

I need three 2tb drives, one for a new build, & two for sky hd boxes, but I will just have to wait.

Seagate on Tuesday reported financial results for the quarter ended December 30, 2011. Shipments of hard disk drives (HDDs) dropped only 3.1% in terms of units, but at the same time the Seagate's earnings increased by 18.5%, whereas the company's profitability rose whopping 375%.

This is off a per unit increase of $2.50 due to the flooding. We are being fleeced.

They were not affected to such a severe level like that of hitachi, and WD.

As WD and hitachi had to increase prices seagate would have been mad to not follow.

Yes the units dropped by a a small amount however everyone elses units dropped by such a large percentage that the overall HDD sales dropped to nearer half over all.

Dont take things on face value and make such assumptions. Seagate ran out of stock on a number of occasions due to others not having available stock so of course they are going to charge more.

In future such threads will be removed as they are pointless.

Please think a post over before going on a rant as there is always more than one perspective on a situation.

so, which is better to buy in this current crisis?

a 60GB SSD or 500GB HDD, both priced similarly.

Right now, SSDs are used more for loading an OS and certain programs faster. So it depends if you need the storage or if you could sacrifice the storage for speed.

I'm going down a completely different route for storage until this madness sorts itself out. My media server pool has RAID 0+1, so a stripe which is mirrored. Right now, instead of adding extra hard drives to increase the storage area on my arrays, I have actually deleted the second backup (RAID 1) mirror of my RAID 0+1 setup (I have two 2TB as RAID 0 plus another set same mirroring the first).

So instead of 3.7TB usuable with the same as a mirror, I have put all four in RAID5 giving me just over 5.5TB of storage space. So now I have more space with disc redundancy but no data redundancy.. so I just bought an LTO5 tape drive for £800 and that included 9 tapes. For almost the same money I could have bought 4 3TB drives.. but this way I just add more tapes when I need more storage. I don't know why I didn't think about this ages ago :)

Not had a quick Google yet...... but what's the tape prices like for your particuler hardware? Is this more of a backup solution though ?

I'll have to have a look at the tech to understand it a bit more.... just being lazy :)

You have to be really honest with yourself and make the decision of

1. What do I want to use the "new" drive for (OS/boot drive = SSD - Data = 500GB HDD)

2. And more importantly ..... DO I REALLY NEED IT RIGHT NOW?

A lot of the moaning is coming from people that are buying drives with no "real" need for them. Surprised that some members running any sort of Server/NAS/backup solution have not had the brains to have at least one drive as a failure backup waiting in the wings months or years ago. :(

I'd delete that message before you feel the wrath of Andrew Moore, OcUK don't allow any discussion of competitors even though you didn't name them. It's not hard to guess who they are.

Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing

I got lucky. I just happened to buy a 1TB drive right before the flood. Hopefully that will hold me in good stead until prices come down :-)
