I need this to be cleared up, do you mean since we have been seriously listening to music? Nirvana were way before my time if you are looking at it like that... despite being around in my lifetime.

You're on the borderline age wise and plenty old enough to have been listening to Nirvana ;)

Basically limit it to bands you listened to growing up, or were around while you were listening to music but hadn't yet discovered them.

Phnom Penh - Led Zeppelin weren't really around in the mid eighties.

I agree with Woody on this one. Korn, The Deftones and Rage Against the Machine brought 'nu-metal' into the mainstream, a long time before Limp Bizkit. I also think Limp Bizkit are very harshly overlooked, as some of the stuff on 'Significant Other' and 'Chocolate Starfish' is pretty decent, and very slick production wise.

Try and have a bit more discussion and reasons for your choices along the lines of Nitefly, da_mic and m3csl.

Haven't stuck strictly with bands...

Age:- 19

A. Five favourite bands.

1. Bob Dylan
2. The Beatles
3. Velvet Underground
4. Pink Floyd
5. Cream (and Eric Clapton).

B. Most influential bands of our generation.

1. Haven't the foggiest. Actually, Jeff Buckley.
2. ...
3. ...
4. Oh, Belle and Sebastian. They're ace, though I guess not influential.
5. Neil Young still releases albums, doesn't he?

C. Most influential bands of all time.

Most of the ones I cited were pretty influential...
1. Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Pink Floyd (early)
4. Dylan
5. ...

I find with the exception of say Belle and Sebastian I don't really listen to much modern stuff. Or heavy rock. Prefer bluesy rock, straight blues, jazz or folky/country esque music (eg, Dylan, Johnny Cash). I really think Muddy Waters should be in the most influential of all time section, though he's not a band or a rock artist as such.

Edit: Also, despite listening to them a lot - I'm not sure how influential the Rolling Stones would be?

Section C i find very difficult, as my knowledge doesnt go back so far. People such as Buddy Holly, and a lot of the Blues greats that played major roles in shaping the future of music.
IMO all three of the categories are as much personal opinion as anything. Music and your experience and interpretation of it is such an intensely personal thing, that there are never going to be definitive answers. And certainly better to go with your opinion from your experiences, than to say what you think is the 'right' answer because it's what others may say, without having come to that conclusion yourself :)

Well said. It's the bands who've had the biggest impact in your listening career and have inspired other bands who you respect as well. Don't just C&P what the person above you has said if you have either never heard of or despise all the bands they mention ;)

1. Radiohead

4. Rage Against The Machine
5. Nirvana (sadly)

All fairly easy and straightforward choices other than my top five, which could have included Opeth, Sigur Ros, 65daysofstatic, At The Drive-In and many others...

You could almost be my gig buddy Carzy ;)

In other news I finally heard I got my accommodation sorted for Cavendish.

Well if your in Nottingham next year, you can be my gig buddy :p

I've just moved into my new house in Lenton for the second year. Cavendish isn't too bad either from what I've heard but I don't know a great deal about halls like I said in the email.

When you coming across to Notts?

24th of September assuming I'll actually be able to take all the **** I'll need to take with me on a plane by then.

Mildly concerned that piles of people already seem to be talking about accommodation for second year on TSR. I don't particularly want to end up committed to living in a house with a bunch of people I don't know or even remotely like by January of 1st year.

I've already got We Are Scientists, Tool and The Bronx lined up for the first few months in Notts.

I'll come to The Bronx with you, not sure if I have the money for Tool. Opeth are playing Rock City in November I believe (you've got mail by the way :p). And don't worry about second year accomodation, I had the same problem with the retards in my building rushing to get a house. There's really no rush, and obviously you'll need to wait until the end of the first term before you can even contemplate deciding who you want to live with next year. My house was sorted out in March/April time, and what the idiot first years (not including myself :p) don't seem to understand is that there is PLENTY of housing. I do Economics, but you don't need a degree in the subject to figure out that: shedloads of advertising for student houses around town means that there is obviously excess supply compared to demand. Don't worry about it :p
(Thankfully I talked to more second and third years about housing than I did first years, and they know what they are talking about far more than first years)

2. Oasis
3. Eminem
4. RHCP
5. Nirvana

C. Most influential bands of all time.

1. The Sex Pistols - How people seem to not even know they ever existed amazes me, they were a pinnacle point in rock music, these were the last true Rock n Roll band - they killed it. Musically perhaps they aren't the most influencial (nevertheless still up there with the best with Oasis Guns n Roses Nirvana all heavily influenced) but if you take into account how much they changed society, then surely they are the greatest; fashion, art, politics, their influence is almost everywhere and you can still see the results of it today almost 30years later. Even Rap has their influence; musically it may be very different, but the same get up and do it yourself attitude is present, with rappers such as Tupac very aware of all the Sex Pistols stood for.
2. The Beatles
3. Elvis
4. Black Sabbath
5. Jimi Hendrix

Theres many many others worthy of a mention, the list is too short
