The Great Preseason Thread

Very. Were playing excellent stuff. What’s the point in having a preseason like ours and not be confident

Yep, if you're not excited for the new season its a shame. Not long left to wait at any rate.

This has been a useful game for United in showing where we are still lacking the most. We need cover for the wide forwards. One player that can play either side should be enough. Without Sancho today we had to rely on Elanga who isn't good enough currently.

We also need another forward if Ronaldo leaves or we will be far too light up there. With 5 subs this coming season you can have more options and the big rich clubs should be taking advantage of that.

We still aren't close to being fit enough to play the style EtH has us playing as well. Will be interesting to see if he just flogs the players until they adapt or if he take a slower approach to prioritise results over a faster adaptation.

I think you need a couple of midfielders and a forward 100%. Was Ronaldo given permission to take extended leave? If not why is he seemingly playing tomorrow?

It looks like he's picked himself to play anyway

Garbage. MUTV talking up the "bigger picture " of pre-season but the facts are clear and only Eriksen offers anything to be excited about. Squad is weaker, we've bought a left back who looks ok but we now have 4 left backs and about 6 centre backs. We still have to field a fulcrum of McFred and are hoping that Martial and Rashford can miraculously evolve into anything resembling a striker. I hate to say it but ten Hag might be the one gone by Christmas, not Arteta!!!

I hope so as I have a tenner on it lol

I came see him being gone by Xmas, not unless he's Frank de Boer levels of terrible, the social media fanbase will turn on him tho if they aren't flying out the Box.

Because he lost one game to AM who are notorious for what they do? Bar a magical goal from Felix, United had all the game.

We have played a lot of top sides in our Pre-Season and have played well. You can see the players are knackered though but that is the whole point of pre-season to get fitness levels up. Our attacking threat is a bit of a worry but Sancho was missing today which explains a bit of it. The football is looking good however.

Proof will be in the pudding when the actual league starts. The main problem for ETH is how the Ronaldo Situation is managed.

Twas a typo, meant cant. Which I would have thought was obvious based on the next sentence of "not unless he's Frank de Boer levels of terrible". To be fair the same ones that have stuck money on you winning the epl will be the same ones calling the phone ins like 606 and talksport calling for his head when you start to lose games.

I think you'd be fools to sack yet another manager.

Should players be looking knackered one week away from the start of the season?

We have to accept that we're a mediocre team with a mediocre management structure, poor (rich!) owners and what looks to be a good manager. Lots of overpaid players with big egos who simply aren't good enough for winning anything, probably not even top 4.

Not going to win anything major for a long time. Unless we're super lucky.

Yes... because if you are asking anyone to do more work than they are capable of doing in order to increase their fitness drastically you will find they are knackered from working at that intensity before the 90 minutes is up.

The main problem for EtH is he has a squad of mediocre players, most of whom downed tools at the first sniff of adversity.

Mediocre players who managed 2nd in the league despite being managed by a bang average manager for years. We haven't got a league winning squad but we have a good set of players that should be competing for top 4 this season.

When I said something similar I've been told I'm too negative.

Having another Eeyore supporting your negativity doesn't validate your view.

See above. If you want a team to get fitter you have to make them tired. There is a difference between overtraining and the resultant performance issues and working your players hard so that their fitness improves.

Not disagreeing with that at all. But a week away from the start of the league our players should not be gassing. Fitness training should be more or less complete by this stage.

If you ask players to run harder than they are used to they will be gassed no matter how fit they are. The required pace and their fitness just dictate when that happens. There is only so much you can do in less than a month of fitness training and thats ignoring the larger job of coaching them in the way he wants them to actually play.

It took Klopp quite a while to get the Liverpool players fitness levels to a place he was happy with. It will be the same with EtH.

He either has to accept a slower pace and less pressing all season or he will run the players hard and they will adapt but flag in the second half somewhat. Hopefully the 5 subs will help that a bit.
