The hazard perception part on the theory test

The HPT is a complete load. Even if you click when you KNOW that the jerk coming up to the junction is GOING to be a hazard, unless you click when he is actually a full on danger, you wont get points.

Yeah, because passing your hazard perception definitely proves that you're a good driver... ;)

Highway code was the way I learnt my theory too :) I did buy a theory CD but got fed up with it, so read highway code about 3 times. Got 35/35 first time, 34/35 second time - got the stopping times wrong in that one (I didn't learn them)!

I never said it did.
What I am saying is that at the age of 17-21 (a point at which the brain is still extremely good at sucking up information like a sponge - proven) you shouldn't have any problem passing the theory part of your test at all.
There is no "System" required, just do in the test what you are supposed to - so make sure you know the hgihway code before you go in and click as soon as you see a hazard and you'll simply walk through the test.

Those people who failed it really went in under estimating what they would have to do and what knowledge they needed.

I just felt a bit insulted when you said;
stoofa said:
If my mum can do it first time then all you "far better than the older drivers out there" people would have no excuse or hassle getting passed first time
I failed first time on the hazard perception, yet am a much safer driver than a lot of people who have passed first time. It seemed you were implying that anyone who fails first time was a worse driver than your Mum, simply because she passed first time and is older ;)

When I read it, it felt like a kind of "At your age, you'd have to be stupid to fail the test" kind of remark.

Still though, my gripe with the hazard perception is that I was coached to click on every hazard in the clip (the DVD actually points out concealed entrances, warning signs, parked cars, etc. as hazards), which is wrong. You click on _the_ hazard (or two hazards) in the clip within 5 seconds of the hazard making you stop/slow/change direction, but it felt like they didn't want me to know that. I felt very cheated after clicking on every hazard and getting failed for doing so ("cheating" apparently).

I'm not being sour though mate, I'm just explaining :)

I passed it (correction: scraped it) 1st time with no practice. Now I've got that gloat out of they way, my advice to you:

You can get a CD with the ACTUAL video clips used in the official theory test, google it.

It's not hard.

See people on pavement, click.
See a corner, click.
See a parked car, click.
See a car coming other way, click.
See traffic light, click.

As soon as anything appears on the screen click.

And get marked 0 for that clip. I did it on the first question and just scraped through terrified to click anything.

The test is rubbish it adds nothing to the theory test, and in no way proves you can percieve hazards.

Forget practicing it and buying expensive cds and books.

Go on the Highway Code website have a read through for 20 mins before the test.

Youl be fine.

That method held me in good steed full marks for the written part in both motorcycle & car. No need for practicing the the hazard perception.

If only the practical part was so easy

To save creating a new thread on this i will just post in here.

I failed my theory last wednesday by getting 49/50 for the theory and 38/75(need a 44 minimum) for the hazard perception. I went in thinking i wont click much or i'll end up clicking too much.....but i got 0 for 1 or 2 clips which aint good! I'm gonna book another test when i go a lesson on Monday but my instructor thinks a week or two and i should go for my practical so for being a dumbass this is gonna slow my progress.

One of the clips with a country road......i saw no hazard until a narrow humpback bridge(do you click for sheep in the field near the road or what??) so i just clicked when the real hazard was there.

Can anybody recomend decent HPTs online?

For those who think its a load of BS, its to test your observation skills.

You click when you see a potential hazard and you click if it developes, its that simple. You should be doing this when your driving, identifying potential hazards.

Genrally if you see something moving in the direction your heading, or that might affect the line your taking then thats a potential hazard. If its going to cause you to slow or stop or dodge then thats a developing hazard.

Sheep in a field is not a hazard, sheep on the edge of the road and theres no fence to hold them in is a potential hazard, if they head to the road then thats a developing hazard.

Approaching a narrow humped back bridge is a potenial hazard cos you can't the road ahead so the clip will show the car drop speed and as you approach if there is traffic coming then thats a developing hazard.

I got 66/75 first go, it really is like a computer game, click if it moves/waiting to move, click if its going to get in the way, click if it gets in the way.

I got 33/35 and 70/75, just click when you see something that could be a hazard then if it contines to develop to make you do something to change your speed and direction click again, tis lemon squeezie easy :)

I passed my theory first time, although I was only 1 point over the minimum on the hazard perception test. Not bad considering I forgot about the test and only had 2 hours to learn when I ran to my 24 hour ASDA and bought the CD at 10pm.
