It should also be remembered that a life long tory voter came out as more left wing than a John Smith era labour voter in those tests.
Even more to the point, the left/right scale was not the one causing the real contention (that's the economic scale). It's the liberal/authoritarian scale that determines much of what was under debate.
It's also worth noting that nowhere on either of the sites used did they ever claim the centre of the scale was where the average person sits...
