The Hunger Games

d

Not really. Lionsgate removed 7 seconds of footage.

I have seen the un-cut version. Huzzah!

lol....this is the original you fool. Google the word concept.

I'm the fool and you don't even know when the book was published? (as for your mistake, i was actually talking about BR, not THG) nor do you know the original book/movie that first did the "go and survive" crap....wow.

What the flying **** are you talking about. Nobody is talking about the date the book was published. Lionsgate are a film distribution company not book publishers.

Concepts are taken and adapted in art every single day.

The lack of intellect of some people never fails to astound me.

Huh? "Not really"? Then you say they did indeed remove footage?

The UK theatrical cut is censored. That's a fact. Their own statement was that they insisted on completing the required cuts so that they could remain open to their intended audience.

It's not a criticism, just an observation.

Yes...they removed footage but a whole 7 seconds is unlikely to be detrimental to the plot. It's very graphic for a 12 actually.

Like you say, Lionsgate were never going to release THG as a 15. Would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Another review just in . http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/122/1220408p1.html

What are you on about?

The book is only a ~few years old is it not?

I'm aware that it's being heavily criticised for it's similarity to the Battle Royal book which was released ten years earlier iirc.

I know, I'm sure I read that she got the idea from channel surfing and reality television shows?

While it's perfectly capable she didn't know, it was a very popular book / film, widely critically acclaimed.

I'm not criticizing it for being similar, i'm was saying that for ME, it will not be as good as BR.

She's insisted that she was unaware of the existence of Battle Royale when she wrote The Hunger Games...

Yeah right. not that there is anything wrong with putting a spin on something old the actual advert for hunger games looks good, but that has to be pure BS on her part. BR is one of japans most popular films, it's even super popular in western society's.

Is the author of the books American? Let's not forget that while Battle Royale has been commercially available over here for yonks, it's only just getting a release in the US this year after being pretty much banned for all this time. Quite easy for someone in the US who isn't a cinephile to have never heard of it.

You seem to be, this isn't Battle Royal, you even said it wouldn't be as good as the original.

While I'm a big fan of the film, don't judge something until you've seen it.

No, it's still perfectly viable that she didn't see it.

It shows.

It does almost every time he posts.

Ive never heard of Battle Royale, and neither have anyone I have spoke to/asked, so it is indeed possible.

Point proven, here is someone who hadn't heard of it.

Surely if anyone was going to make a fuss about the similarity to BR it would be the original writer of BR, or whoever made the film. Given that they've not, I'm not going to get too upset about it.

Besides, there's only so many stories that can be written.

Epic hype OP is epic :p

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie to see what they've done as the reviews seem positive but I thought the books were so-so - a good enough read but basically Running Man with more teen angst no? Maybe it's just coming off a recent diet of 'heavy' sci-fi/fantasy like Forever War, Veteran series, Hyperion cantos etc it seemed very light and fluffy even compared to say the 40k Horus Heresy stuff :p

Isn't Battle Royale similar to The Running Man? Isn't The Running Man similar to Rollerball? And so on and so on.

Yeah, it's a pretty faulty argument. As you alluded too, there are those who think that there really are only seven types of story that can be written.

Not that similar no. the running man is like gladiators crossed with a man hunt.

battle royale is about kids having to kill each other to survive more like lord of the flies in some ways. it focuses more on the kids relationships and how these are effected under pressure of death. that sounds like what hunger games is aiming for too.

There's a fairly comprehensive list somewhere that I think tops out at 23 storylines. Some chap disputed this number, and insisted there were more, yet when he tried to list them he couldn't even get to 23.

You've missed the point: the fundamental story is essentially the same as Vonhelmet just said...

There's a couple of schools of thought on it. It's something we discussed in my literature classes actually, but yeah, I've heard the 23 thing too. Some academics discuss there only being 36 stories as well, so it's hotly disputed.

I'd definitely go down the line of their only being seven though, personally.
