The Hunger Games

The film was ok (I actually went in thinking it would be a Battle Royale ripoff but came out appreciating it's just a similar concept around an entirely different world)

The books I really enjoyed, they're a bit teen fiction (the love triangle thing is a bit annoying) but I still really enjoyed them.
 
Gustov in "my opinion and only my opinion matters" shocker! :p I'm only surprised he hasn't come out with the "I'm a film student' line yet.

I've never got round to watching this yet but am not expecting it to blow me away. Maybe I'll be surprised.
 
Read the books recently and just saw the film.

Ok, a film is almost always never as good as the book, but despite being nearly two and a half hours long, this film felt like it just glossed over everything and watered it down.

I didn't mind too much about the missing characters, but I did feel like it didn't really establish the dire situation in District 12 clearly enough or the reason for Kat being a hunter.
Was weird. The film felt both rushed and too slowly paced at the same time.
If I hadn't read the books, I would give the film a meh rating. Since I can fill in the gaps, it was just about aiight.

Just seen this. All in all it was a GOOD film. I agree that the build up was longer than it needed to be, the games were too short and the ending was abrupt - but I enjoyed it.

Did think it was a Battle Royale rip off though...

The second one is out in November apparently - bound to be worse than the first?!

The book is supposed to be better than the first so in theory the film should be better.
 
I didn't think I would but I enjoyed this film, not sure the plot (in the film at least) meant a sequel was necessary but as it's on the way regardless I'll be sure to check that out as well :)

Put in spoiler tag for those who haven't read the book although I've kept it very general.

For all intents and purposes it is exactly the same with a slightly different beginning and some old people in the game. The 3rd book showed the more promise but always felt rushed and had a deflated ending. Again all of it is likely to be ruined by aiming for a 12a while the books actually being rather vivid with gore and method of killing one another

There were two main problems for me:

1) The film didn't have time (12A, yo) to explain everything or to really make the circumstances clear.
2) Without Katniss' internal monologue you don't know what she's thinking or feeling, so the character comes across as very dry and appears to be badly acted, when it's more like her being limited by the screenplay.
 
That vid from 2:11-2:35 is bang on and pretty much encapsulates what I was getting at.

I actually thought she nailed the role. That pretty much is what she's like in the book. Perhaps it's easier for those that have read it to see that.
 
I think back to and still stand by its one of the worst films made given reputable source material. Bit like if the had made the hobbit but not bothered to scale all the actors and added a bit with a machine gun... (Probably will go read the books at some point to make my self feel better about the hunger games film)

Totally agree with you.

I asked FF if I had 'missed' the rules... ok it could be argued that the rules are simple - fight till the last man is standing.

Then I watched it again and its not till Katniss goes onto the field that the mentor bloke tells her not to go for the bag but to run away.

Is it explained anywhere what weapons are used/bags/gifts are available?
