The importance of replacing thermal paste

For those people who re apply paste to their GPU's do you need to consider any screws that are covered with a tamper covering..?
AFAIK some manufacturers still apply those, my MSI card has one, and try and use that to avoid warranty claims if broken.

This thread convinced me redo my 5ghz 9900k. For me same temps before and after, still the Noctua cooler got a dusting..!

Touchwood i've never had to claim warranty on a card i've purchased so if a sticker is stuck on a screw to ward off tampering, it doesn't bother me.. otherwise just stick with what paste it already has and leave it alone. To the general user, that is enough

Odd I've used thermal grizzly expensive stuff (kyronaut is it? The top one that's not lm) and found it to dry out quickly. Even the stuff in the tube seems to not be very liquid like any more.

My temps are like 45c with 10c drops (so goes around in loops from 45 down to 35 then shoots back up again and repeats).

Is that normal with r5 3600?

Yeah, Kryo can be a bit thick. I tend to have it on a radiator in the tube for a 10 mins or so before application. Seems to stiffen up at anything below around 25 degrees.

Ahhhhh awesome thanks. Maybe It was really warm when first applied it (was summer in China at 35c) then just seemed really thick due to it being in uk at like 20c. I was literally gonna buy some more thinking it had gone off haha

Worth a bash, I Definetly noticed a big difference in ease of application.

Sounds like something is chugging away in the background using cpu, my 3800xt will drop to 28c at idle if left for a while with a arctic 34 duo.

Seems that way but it's done this since new, fresh install of w10. Yeah your more powerful cpu is cooler wtf... What ambient you have usually? 21c?

If I look at processes there's sod all in there and usage stays around like 2% usually but still does it.

I'm wondering if it's something a bios refresh might fix.

Pc also never ever goes into sleep mode. Monitor follows the proper settings when going to sleep. Pc doesn't matter what I set.

Hi all.

I just wanted to reiterate to all concerned about the importance of reapplying thermal paste.

I've had my 9900k for around 2 years and my strix 1080ti from launch and decided the other weekend to reapply the thermal paste on both with grizzly kryonaut (I'm not endorsing just this product but this is the one I used) and my temps have gone from 85 degrees at 100% usage to 70 on the cpu at 4.8 and from 70 to 60 at 100% GPU usage.

This may not be ground breaking to all of you but I feel it makes a huge difference. My GPU can now overclock to way over 2000mhz and the fans on my CPU cooler don't make anywhere near as much noise.

Not only will the silicone last a bit longer but for a little bit of messing around everything is running cooler and more efficiently.

It's worth it :D.

Have a great day all!
That is quite the difference!

If you have to re-paste then it's more an issue with the original paste used.

For over 10 years I've been using IC Diamond 24, I've never once had to re-paste using IC Diamond. Unfortunately it's very difficult to purchase IC Diamond at the moment, but that does not take away my experience of the paste.

Strangely. It's quite a thick gooey paste. Very sticky.
