The kid can certainly thump tubs!

call me crazy but this proves nothing, he's got the chops, its a crap drum solo though since Neil Peart pwns him at drum solos. Maybe if he was playing in a band situation we can say he is good

omg really? that professional who's been playing for decades is better than that 12 year old? that's such a surprise. do better yourself then. go on.

You didn't consider any of that 8 minute solo to be even good? I'd happily bet quite a lot of money that over half the drummers in todays signed and successful Indie bands couldn't even hope to play a solo that well, and this kid was 12 when that was recorded.

Well done for pointing out that a 53 year old man with decades of experience may well be better than a twelve year old child, that's very astute of you. This kid probably can't even pick up some of the drums he plays there but his stamina holds the rhythm the entire way through the eight minute solo so he at least gets a pat on the back from me even if you can only describe his efforts as "crap".

I can say from my own experience that he is very good. I doubt I could play that solo for the next 2 years even if I tried really hard at it. And I can tell you that I don't have the stamina now to play one minute of it.

my point in, a solo is supposed to keep you interested, much like a solo is a story, it has a beginning, middle and end with the middle passage creating emphasis from the beginning and then the end finalising it. All that solo was was a demonstration of chops, like I said, he's got chops, but from a solo stand point, its by no means a solo, he's not even close to a solo, age means absolutely nothing, im using Neil peart as an example as Neil Peart's solos are a much better example of a solo than what this kid is doing; a demonstration of chops. And like I said, even then, we cannot say he is good because the idea of drums is too play the rhythm in a band (it can be a solo instrument, but it is very difficult). He hasn't demonstrated any profficiency in band situations, show us a clip of him playing in a band and then we can judge his skill as a band member and not as a chop player.

[edit] infact, if he hadn't said it was a drum solo, most of you wouldn't be calling it a solo

You'll make a great parent LOL

And why wouldn't we call it a solo? I was under the impression, a solo, is er....a solo?

if you check the site there is some examples of him playing with others. i think he does a pretty decnet job as a band member :) .

the site also shows him with Billy Cobham, who is probably my favourite drummer of all time. check out the Mahavishnu Orchestra (but once again it's prog jazz rock) his solo stuff is mostly funk based which is a little easier on the ear.

I think I explained why I personally wouldn't call it a solo.

But you put "infact, if he hadn't said it was a drum solo, most of you wouldn't be calling it a solo"

Which is saying we wouldn't call it a solo...

Billy Cobham is awesome. Can see his influence all over Jon Theodore's stuff. Birds of Fire is such a fantastic album.

I can't deny that the kid has chops, but there was no feel to that, It was all so robotic.

Give me a Carl Palmer/Neil Peart solo over that anyday :D

Although ultimately, i could just listen to Steve Gadd groove for hours.

I thought thats what a solo was anyway. :p

They rarely have any musical value in most songs, they break the pattern and melody for a brief period of pretentious willy waving imho.

Phalanx - I've never heard so much garbage.

I lived through the drum solo era where every major and non major band did a drum solo.
You couldn't get away from them and it was usually the time I went the toilet. I've seen Bonham do his boooooring solo 4 times, Carl Palmer 3 times, Ian Paice was a tad better and even Neil Peart was boring in the 70's - the Professor my arse. The only drummer that made me watch was Jon Hiseman with Colliseum when Gary Moore was with them. Your're all lucky, during the 70's it was the big thing for the drummer to leave the kit and play around it, on the floor, on the amps, on the PA and sometimes on the glasses on the tables. Neil Peart only got interesting when he put screens at the back of him and played with what was on the screen. I don't think you realise how many weeks of drum solos I've heard through my life and which I could have all those hours back. At least 12 year old Tony whatshisnames 'chops' would have kept me entertained for a couple of minutes. The best solo I've heard was by Cheap Tricks drummer because he did everything he needed to do in less than a minute and thats the order I gave to my drummer or else I'll turn the PA down.

I hate drum solos.
