The Lack of VRAM thread

Never happened on my two 670's so far.

But then i only game at 1080p. So far everything has played beautifully at max settings at 1080p .

I dont expect this to last too much longer though but i will be upgrading to a single maxwell/20nm card next year so meh, i will probably never have an issue.

I dislike most of the high res texture packs, while the official one is somewhat garbage it fits fairly seamlessly - most of the packs are ultra high res images of the "right kind of surface" slapped haphazardly over the geometry and it just looks odd to me.

Yeah that's the one plus with Bethesda's stuff; if you use texture packs from multiple modders the resulting mismatches can often be quite drastic.

I'm on twin 2GB GTX660s and as of yet I've never seen it happen. I play all my games at 1920*1200 and the highest useage I've ever seen is around the 1700 - 1800MB mark with things like Crysis 3 / Skyrim with loads of mods. The only game I've seen actually max it is COD:Ghosts which seemed to sit at exactly 1950MB whilst still hitting the frame rate limiter. Having said that it was also pushing my RAM useage to well over 10GB at the same time which I've never seen before and some googling suggests it just likes to fill up as much space as it can see for caching.

Back in the day, Crysis 1 (no mods) running at 5760x1080 at highest settings with 8xAA I'm pretty sure I hit a VRAM limit.

The built in benchmark ran, not well, but about 20FPS if I remember right with 4xAA. Upped it to 8xAA and the frame rate dropped to about 1 frame every 10 seconds! When I swapped the 2 x 5870's for a single overclocked 7970 I had about the same amount of GPU grunt (as evidenced by frame rates at lower settings being about the same) but had 3GB rather than 1GB. The built in benchmark now ran fine at 8xAA and produced about 10-20FPS.

But still, I was able to run Crysis on 3 screens at the highest in-game settings on only 1GB of VRAM provided I didn't go nuts on the AA. Still think that was pretty impressive.

Geforce 4 Ti4200 64MB in WoW at 1024x768, could run the game fine at okay settings (for 2006) but if I entered a city it became a slideshow and sometimes crashed, replaced with a 6800GT 128MB and all was good.

Skyrim with beths high res dlc was pushing me into high vram.... But they are badly optimized and thus i used skrim hd textures which are far better. No more stuttering vram usage back down

BF4, All Ultra, Post AA Low, No MSAA, Resolution Scale 150%+

Powercolor PCS+ 7870XT Myst (2GB)

As you can see in the screen shot at those settings it uses a lot of VRAM, in this case 1940MB, its not always that much it can range from 1600MB to 1970MB.

Once it goes anything over 1950MB its starts to stutter, the map i took that screen shot on is not bad, on maps with a lot of vegetation the RAM is almost always maxed out and its unplayable.

Increasing the Resolution Scale has the effect of running a higher res down scaled to 1080P or whatever you have it set at. so in my case 1080P @ 150% is like running 1600P or so. Textures are sharper, more depth in the image and jaggies are reduced even without any AA.
Its nice, but the bottom line is i can't run more than 125%, i don't have enough VRAM.

Has not happened to me so far on my 780. But I will probably download an insane amount of graphical mods for Skyrim soon and test it out maxed at 1440p, however I am already using a fair amount of graphics mods and my VRAM usage doesn't tend to exceed 2GB.

The original 1998 game Microprose Falcon 4.0 w/ BMS mod & GeoMod Ultra High res texture pack. 98% Vram usage on 512MB, 1GB, 1.5GB & 2GB cards I've tried. I could see ground texture swapping when the limit was reached however the game was still acceptable to play. First with my 3GB 780's I don't have to turn down some settings in 2560x1440 16xQCSAA.

If you run out of vram, lower a few settings and live with em for a while.:D

I'm a GFX whore :(

How old is this game? it looks pretty darn good by any standard.

Me too mate, hence i bought a gtx 780:D But, bit dissapointed because its in my case its by itself. It needs another one to keep it company.:D

Its cruel to have one lonely GPU in the Case, shame on you, get it a play mate. :D
