Mine worked on the third attempt, first time I think it failed as i was updating other windows updates and second time I was updating mse within the same batch.
Wife's computer got it on the second go.

Downloaded fine but had a couple of blue screens this morning on boot. Seems OK now though.
Got it on the second attempt, as I could not connect to the Internet after installing the updates, had to reboot the home hub .
So I followed the advice here http://social.technet.microsoft.com...l/thread/ca6ab922-e35e-4cf5-90a6-4d635d83e5ae and turned off anti virus & firewall. Installed ok ! Only problem was, I lost my internet connection & had to reboot the router.
Go figure !

The .NET update failed for me as well, x64.
I just looked at the update name: KB982670, and was led to this page. Grab either the web or standalone installer (I picked standalone since it means you deffinately download it all), it installed fine and WU is happy now

I was offered .NET 3.5 SP1 and .NET 4 on both a Win7-64 laptop and desktop system. Laptop took two attemps to get v4 installed, desktop took three. Both went busy on the HDD for quite some time following installation as well. No temperature issues to speak of, other than how the warm weather is affecting system temps as a whole.
