It seems as though this thing is sweeping the boards regarding "reviews" and many are calling it a contender or just the flat out, "Best game EVER".

Really?

I am old by gamer standards and to be honest, have never been a console gamer.

Started with the old 8-bit home computers, Spectrum, Amiga then onto PC. I dabbled with an Original Gameboy, a NES in my younger days and a DS at some point and I did have a Wii (less said the better) but that is it.

Looking at the coverage for Breath of the Wild that is out there, Youtube, Twitch streams etc, I do not see "Best game ever" material. Sure, the odd thing will make my spider senses tingle, but definitely no wood.

I do not see any one game mechanic which looks revolutionary or "not seen that before".

Sure, what I do see does seem "solid" but the "game" aspect is lost on me.

Am I alone in these thoughts?
Am I missing something?

Does having no emotional attachment to the franchise possibly cloud my judgement?

I am like you bud. I started with a Spectrum when I was 14 and been through consoles, Amiga's, PC's etc but was never a fan of the Zelda games but on the same breath, I also understand fans are out there in their millions, so good for them I guess. Half Life 3 for us would be the same and regardless would get 10/10 everywhere :D

Nope I'm with you. I grew up with the Commodore family of computers. Nintendo/Sony/Sega never registered with me at all until I tried a PSone in 1999. It lasted a day because of the god awful resolution. But when the Xbox 360 came out, I ditched my PC and spent 10 years as a console gamer with Xbox and PlayStation. But still not Nintendo. I've always seen them as kids' consoles.

Still, I am intrigued by this Zelda game - first one ever. But there's no way I'm going to pay £350 just to play it. I know I'll soon forget about it and move on, especially when Mass Effect: Andromeda comes along. And Breath of the Wild will be something I watch being speedrun at SGDQ.

I also suppose it depends on whether you have previously played a Zelda game. I've not. I don't know who or what Zelda is. So I have no vested interest to continue any adventures in that world and I wouldn't say my gaming life is any poorer not having played "Ocarina of Time" for example. You don't miss what you don't know, to paraphrase an old saying.

I have always been into gaming whatever the platform. I have all of the major consoles apart from the Switch (PS4, XBONE, Wii U, 3DS etc), but the reality is that I play on my PC a lot more than all of them combined.

I do enjoy the Zelda games, but I am not a hardcore nut like a lot of people.

When the OOT was released I remember queuing outside a Game store in Southampton for the midnight release. I got it and was underwhelmed, I am sure its a great great game. but the Zelda games have never hooked me. This new one does interest me a lot but I will have to wait till I go to the States and the UK between April and June to pick up one.

Mine will be here within the next two hours. Will let you guys know.

I think with Zelda you will find not all Zelda games are the same. Last Zelda i truely loved was Ocarina of Time, the ones that came after were not quite the same for me, I even missed some as they did not look appealing. This Zelda however looks and sounds special.

Nothing to do with it being kiddy or anything IMO. As someone who is mainly a PC gamer I am more excited about Zelda than anything else coming out on any platform in 2017.

it's Zelda so it'll be hyped, i still have fond memories of playing ocarina of time.
nowadays i'm not so interested anymore , but a lot of other people are :p

I was in the same boat, no interested in the Switch at all till I saw them reviews.
I started on a C64 but I did all the console's as well as the computers over the years, put some time into Zelda on the game boy as well.
Personally I find handheld consoles a bit childish now, that said got my missis to pick one up so I'll soon find out, might be up on MM by Sunday or it could be on the same lines as probably my favorite game TW3. Who know's I don't normally ignore a 10/10 game though, gaming is one of my main hobby's so need to experience it for myself.
VR was a massive game changer for me when I had a Vive, unfortunately it gave me massive sickness so had to go back :-( still miss playing it today.

Zelda ocarina of time is one of the best games ive ever played, I love Zelda games and Nintendo is by far my fave when it comes to console gaming, this new Zelda game I think (and hope) will be amazing!! I wont have a switch until later in the year but cant wait to get one :)

I'm also looking forward to the new Mario on switch

Top quality gaming isn't rare on PC- but this is on a portable device in a well built package that slickly docks for TV gaming. That's what we're missing as PC gamers. I'm getting one :D

nintendo do make great games. if you look at the top i think its 15 -20 on best sellers of all time they are on nintendo platforms.

the product normally works great out the box for console games.pc generally we have a month of bugs on release or its some kickstarter type early access mess.that is one of the problems on pc.even though we benefit more in other ways.

single player games on pc generally i wont complete.i end up bored.its for mp.on console though on wii u for eg or wii i enjoyed playing super mario type games to completion.some may class as kiddie type games but the fun is there and many adults play them.

I'd like to play through it as I loved OoT as a kid but I'm not buying a console purely for one game.

Shame they won't bring it to PC but it's been the same with some PS3 and PS4 titles I've missed out on.

I would agree however the problem is purchasing a piece of hardware which has lets be honest, ZERO third party support to play a new first party release once every year or so if lucky.

The sales for third party games are simply not there on Nintendo nowadays.

Yes, it is a "chicken and egg" thing but it is the way it is and Nintendo do NOTHING to encourage that growth.

Shame they won't bring it to PC

It is only down to sheer stubbornness that they do not.

The money is there, the only thing they have to lose is their pride.

The world has changed, I see no reason why they cannot go "Multi platform" with their releases.

One reason I can think is their games will be judged against a wider playing field and I do not think they want that.

Frankly, I can believe it's a very good game, exceptionally maybe. I jump between PC and PS4 and most of the time console exclusives blow the stuff I play on PC out of the water. I only use it for multiplatforms.

Breath of Wild does give off similar vibes and looks like something I'd really like to play.

This has made me interested in the Switch.

Is there any difference in the versions. IE is the Wii version graphically better (I have no idea about Nintendo hardware!)

The Switch version is better, but not massively - despite being a handheld it is more powerful than the Wii U.

The only difference is that the switch plays at 920 and the wii u plays at 720. And if you undock the switch, it also plays at 720 resolution.

Ah okay thanks.

That Switch looks decent actually. Pretty cool Console / Hand Held Gaming / Tablet thingy!

Will probably grab one :)
