I find the criticism of a lack of story in BOTW odd. Elden Ring is one of the best games ever and its story is light at best.
They're both similar games in that they gave you a massive world to explore, and a load of tools, and let people go nuts.
Obviously ER does a lot of it more thoroughly, as a genuine RPG, and legacy dungeons (which in fairness BOTW has four of), but you have to remember that 6 years ago the idea of just dropping someone in a world and saying "go nuts" was pretty revolutionary.
There's a reasonable and very fair argument they BOTW isn't what you'd expect from a Zelda game, but it's an excellent game in its own right, and for the time was groundbreaking
