The M6.. Variable speed limit?

just look on the opposote carriageway as you approach, afaik they are used both sides on same gantry

I'm sure I've seen some with only cameras on one side. And there's certainly gantries which are completely empty on one side, but have speed cameras on the other.

A few people mixing up Active Traffic Management and Average Speed (SPECS) cameras here.

The ones on the M25 and M42, as Jez mentions, are Active Traffic Management, where variable speed limits are imposed as and when necessary. I'd far far rather that than permanent SPECS......

This is the problem, on the M42, cameras are on both sides of the carriageway for the majority of the ATM stretch. However there are several sections on M6 where there is no gantry the other side.

Better stick to the variable speed limit!

Sorry to revive an old thread but I didn't wish to create a new thread regarding the same subject...

After much use of this stretch of the M6 I have come to the conclusion that the cameras are off when there are no speed limit signs lit up. I've regularily been doing 90+ and not a single notice through the post, been more than a few weeks.

On another note, I accidently went 60 past one of the grey cameras when the signs were stating 40 and **** myself for a couple weeks but nothing at all, so it appears that maybe they do treat them as average cameras, or maybe they were off... or maybe I just got lucky.

But that was a one off with the speed limit signs on, with them off I'm always going over the limit and have had no problem what so ever.

A lot of them are off on the M6, as I was wondering when everyone was flying past me and I was sitting at 50mph!

Ahh, I forgot about this thread.

Just read your reply NVP. I might pluck up the courage to exceed 70mph next time I hit the M6 then, thanks!

ive not been up the M6 for a few weeks, but i used to do it twice a week for a year so saw this progress nicely.

on the rear of SOME gantrys they have big boxy looking "gatso" looking devices so i guess theyre serious

Not every gantry has a camera in it... maybe every second or third one. Therefore it seems you did 60 through one of the ones without one.

I don't understand why you would risk it? Is that not like doing 90 past a parked police car because someone on the Internet told you the copper wasn't paying attention?

It's not at all, it's hugely irritating and you feel like you are going backwards.

It is only irritating if you are doing 50mph and lots of other people simply ignoring the speed limit and zooming past you. Irritates me both on variable speed limits and average speed camera zones.

I think the variable speed limits on the M25 and the M42 are fantastic and have made my drive from Bolton to Hampshire a lot less stressful during peak hours.

no they're not

they're already starting to line the length of the M62 and M1

the entire motorway network is going to covered by them before they are finished.

Well, we can always pray that their going to install variable speed limits on all the motorways and then raise the NSL on them to 80 like the rest of Europe I suppose...

I think you will find most of Europe is 120 KM/H which is about 75MPH. France is about 80MPH in the dry but as soon as it starts raining that drops to under 70MPH.

Actually the majority of Europe is 130kph which is roughly 80mph, but tbh I think Frances idea of reducing it to 60mph in rain is a good idea, we would have a lot less accidents here if the law said rain reduces nsl by 10mph

Sorry... forgot about all those Eastern European countries for the speed limit is 130. I was only thinking of the old fashion civilised Western Europe.

I drove down the M6 this weekend, I was doing 80-90mph towards the Toll Road. Zooming past all the variable speed signs, guess I can be expecting a fixed penalty notice in the next 2 weeks then.
