The M6.. Variable speed limit?

Not every gantry has a camera in it... maybe every second or third one. Therefore it seems you did 60 through one of the ones without one.

On the M42 stretch of "traffic management" you can tell which ones have cameras on because the other carriage way have grey boxes with a smaller white bit on them, see one of those on the gantry on the other lane look as you pass under it and you'll see the same on your side :) Check it

So, time for a bump.

I've off to see the Mrs again this weekend.. which means.. Dun Dun Dunnnn... the M6 again.

Now, can someone please finally clarify for me how these Active Traffic Management systems work? I hate having to drive down the stretch of the M6 & M42 where these systems exist as I'm constantly worrying about getting a ticket.

Cheers,

The gantry has a matrix sign which can display a speed limit.

If its displaying a limit then that is the limit and the cameras enforce it.

Seriously, it isnt hard. The speed on the sign? Thats the speed limit. Do it.

Thats all there is too it.

No No No! Sorry for my vague post. I realise I should stick to the gantry limit at all times.. But what I meant to ask was, what limit should I stick to when the gantrys are clear and unlit.

70mph is what I've always stuck to, but I'm wondering if I can do 80mph without being done ;)

I was coming up the M6 last night and the guy ahead of me got flashed for doing about 80.. I was doing about 75 behind him and didn't. :)

When the signs are off, the variable limit cameras are off. I drive thorugh the ones around Birmingham regularly and have never had a problem.

I'm assuming the signs were lit up with a national symbol (meaning the limit was set to 70)? If not, which cameras were these as I've passed through the variable limit ones many times without being flashed.

Nope, the signs weren't lit up. I was wondering if they were working so was watching my speed, the guy infront wasn't though and it definitely gave him two flashes!

I find that hard to believe due to the fact that I use the M6 almost daily and have never had an issue? Many a time I have sat at 80/85Mph without any comeback/ticket. This is when the overhead gantry's are off and not displaying anything. Do you mean the strech before the retail park (Fort Park) ?

I was thinking the exact same thing, I've never had any trouble even when over 3 digits.

Disclaimer: The statement above is purely fictional.

I've noticed they have these on the M1 near the M25 interchange (6a) and I was doing 90 +. The signs were off, but I am still worried. Anyone know if the cameras are only working when they variable speed limit is actually displayed on the gantry?

I was under the impression if there is no variable limit posted then the cameras do not operate.

I tested it recently on the M25 and well...suffice to say none of the 10s of cameras I went through seemed to care.

Yeh this is what I think too, I have literally bombed it down that stretch of the M1 numerous times and not been caught. It is only since my friend told me there are cameras in the gantries there that I began to worry. Like I said, no speed limit was been displayed on the gantry.
