The Manchester United Club Thread **Sponsored by Comedy Central**

Urgh, this is a minefield Baz. At least there is one thing we can all agree on... Liverpool are amazing and I love BaZ.

I would love to know what keeps Rooney in the side. Whether our managers haven't felt like they have better alternatives or if it is orders from the top. As others have said, its going to be a huge defining part of our season what happens with Rooney. I have no issue with him playing if he is playing well but I want to see him treated like any other player if he isn't.

The problem is, as we've seen, as soon as somebody mentions something transfer related it snowballs and the entire thread will just be discussing transfers. We have and have always had transfer threads and they work fine - keep transfer talk in there so that people that might not be interested in Utd's tactics and potential line-ups don't miss transfer news/rumours etc.

I would imagine it has to be orders from above. He's a highly marketable player on a large wage and is basically unsellable at this point in his career. I doubt the higher ups want him to be sitting on the bench sadly.

Is it really the end of the world.if we have two threads potentially talking about transfers? I don't understand why there isn't a little leeway...why is it such a big deal in SA?

It's not like the whole thread is about transfers, a few posts isn't going to harm anyone.

Y so pointlessly strict?

I can understand Baz's thoughts. He doesn't want this thread replacing the transfer thread. I think it's fine mentioning transfers in context to other discussions but it can't be the main focus of discussion. So I mentioned our potential lineup and then as a sidenote mentioned a couple of players that I thought we should get rid of.

He also secretly loves Man Utd so this way he can spend more time getting involved with discussions about United. :)

Exactly. One of the main reasons why these threads were banned years ago was because anything and everything was being discussed in here and many members didn't want to have to wade through pages of general Utd/Liverpool/Arsenal chat to keep up with bigger issues like transfers.

It would be great to allow some leeway but unfortunately it will become the main topic of conversation and soon after it will go the way of the club threads we had before and all transfer news and everything else will just go in here.

As I mentioned to Frank, as long as it's just a brief mention within a post it's fine but when it's the main point of the post it no longer is.

My view at the moment, no matter the formation is that we need someone who can get the ball forward with a purpose.

Carrick was good at this for a while (but never that great) but he's on the decline now, any remote pressure and he becomes useless. Schweinsteiger can do it but again, it's never been his speciality and he's also not quite the player he was.

I'm surprised we kept Carrick as I can only see him playing the odd game here and there. Herrera is more about movement than pure passing ability so he's not much good either. Schneiderlin is a more defensively minded box to box player and his passing isn't great.

I can see why we're after someone for central midfield. As for the no. 10 position, I think Mata is bound to go, and I suspect Rooney is likely to start there, whether he'll stay there is another matter. Perhaps Herrera could fill in there.

I'm very much looking forward to watching a front 3 of Martial - Zlatan - Mkhitaryan. A nice balance of power, pace and experience, with loads of technical ability.

Yeah I don't understand why we renewed Carrick's contract. We have experience and quality in Schweinsteiger, keeping another one around just seems silly. He's had a good career with us and it seems like a good time for it to end.

Depends how much he is on and what role Mourinho thinks he could fill. Against the right opposition he is still very effective. Hes just no good against anyone who pressures him.

That doesn't really matter if we're not having him as a first choice. We don't need two backups that offer the same thing. Schweinsteiger is better at everything Carrick can do.

Going into this season with Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Blind, plus the new signing would be plenty of options. And Fellaini of course if we don't ship him out.

Everyone seems agreed that Rooney is terrible now ... but I wonder.

I mean, pretty much everyone in the team has seemed terrible for the last 3 years. Presumably they aren't all as bad as they've seemed, so could the same be true for Rooney?

It might be a vain hope, but I'm willing to give all of them a chance under a manager who (hopefully) knows what he's doing.

I would love to agree about Rooney but its not his form that has gone, its his speed in every part of his game. I watched some highlights of him from 5-6 years ago and yes his pace has died a death since then but he is so slow to move the ball and pass it on now. Every area of his game is too slow and he has never been a super skilful player. Mourinho even said so in not so many words with his "even I can pass nicely under no pressure in midfield" comments. Unless he quickens his game up or suddenly gets his eye back for goal he should be binned.

I remember watching something a few years back about Rooneys latest contract increase and basically it pays for itself. EPL footballers are suggested to do so many hours per week on marketing and promotional work Previous to this contract Rooney was doing maybe half of what he is doing now. So as a condition he was required to do more marketing and product endorsments which Utd took a slighly bigger cut of overall

In a nutshell Rooney is highly marketable (Maybe not as much in the UK but certainly overseas) both as Utd Captain and England Captain (that of course may change) So when his basic goes up by saty £75k a week and a slight increase on media commitments, it brings in more money for him and considerably more money for Utd.

Rooney in some ways is the same as Zlatan. Keep him near the first team, role him out for the big games and keep the far east markets pumping the cash.

For footballing reasons he may well have had his day in the EPL but as a money making machine, there is gas in the old goat yet.

This is massively over played. Man Utd are bigger than Rooney or Zlatan. Rooney's not nearly as big a star as Beckham or Ronaldo were and when those left there wasn't a negative effect on commercial deals.

It helps having big name players but the reality is it makes minimal difference. If they leave the club & sponsors make new stars by pushing someone else's face in the spotlight.

Easy Tex, only saying what I saw.

No difference to me if he moves on or not. One thing you may not acknowledge is that while Beckham and more recently are Ronaldo are more box office than Rooney, the money from Sponsorship and endorsments has increased and Man Utd are more savvy than ever before at ringing every last penny out of anything with a badge on it. Going back when Beckham played he got the vast majority of endorsement money. Now its a much more even split.

Rooney makes money for Utd it's as simple as that. And while that continues the chances of him moving are slim.
