What can you do if he's under contract?

Oh nothing other than try and sell him. The issue is that we haven't done that for a very long time. Luke Shaw has been injury prone for years at this point and I have never heard talk of moving him on. Martial had a lot of issues with injuries but again, we never moved him on.

All you can do is get rid of players when they show that they are not capable of retaining the fitness required at the top level. Other leagues are slower and less physical than the PL and other teams are willing to take quality players with injury issues because of the quality they can offer even if its not all the time. Any club with ambitions of winning things can't afford to carry players who are only available half the time unless they are utterly world class.

Does make you wonder if that terrible Injury he had under LVG was the catalyst for him never being able to reach peak fitness for the Premier League and play consistently back to back.

What's amazing is how Utd have kept renewing his contract. You often read comments about his leg break ruining his career but I just looked at his injury record on transfermarkt - he missed 125 days/31 matches the season he joined Utd, the season before he broke his leg.

edit: lol perfect timing.

What was that poster in the pandemic and brexit, ledbydonkeys ??

I dont think Shaw's ability as a footballer was ever in question. He's a decent enough full back, fits the profile of the modern game, can defend and useful going forward (He was ever at the Shawberto, best in class levels the press were gushing over a few years back in my humble opinion) However what it does highlight is the sheer incompetence from the Glazers by not investing when they should in data, analytics, science and best in class rehab and recovery.

£10m spent years ago could have saved us £100m today as we go through successive short term fixes in the 'Hope' we get Peak Shaw on the pitch for a string of games

In 20/21 and 22/23 he made 47 apps though. He was fit enough for those seasons but alas we can only speculate as no one knows what is actually wrong with him.

Those two seasons are quite clearly exceptions to the norm though. He wouldn't be the first injury prone player to have the odd season where he's got lucky and managed to avoid injury, it happens all the time but the next season they're crocked again. And even then, according to transfermarkt he had a 60 day injury between mid July and mid September at the start of the 20/21 season.

This is his 10th season at the club and throughout that time, barring the odd spell, he's consistently picked up injuries. I'm no sports scientist however even I could tell you that a player with his injury record was never going to age well. For Utd to have given him at least 2 contract extensions in that time is madness.

Yeah I agree. He is a fantastic talent but they should have replaced him a long time ago and we never have really. I guess with me I always have the hope he will come good as he seems a decent lad and always puts a shift in when he is fit.

He's had a big injury now in each of his three seasons. Another crock, which is a shame as he was starting to play much better in the new system. Maybe Johnny Evans will be back soon - lol
He's not an elite defender either, perhaps that's because he never hit his best for that long due to always getting back up to speed from injury though. Another one to shift on I guess, when the time comes.

As with so many things. The why is not really that important. The reality is all that matters and whether there is a disgruntled Liverpool fan out there whos mums on benefits and has been sticking a voodoo doll of him with needles for years, he can't stay fit.

Which poster is that then? :p

Shaw and Martinez contracts run until... 2027

I'd definitely pay off Shaw early and ideally Maritnez too.

I would certainly look to offload Shaw in the summer. Martinez there is no point in doing anything with until he comes back from his injury.

How do you offload Shaw , pay him what's remaining of contract or keep in hope he might might just get fit ? No one's buying him or taking him on loan

It's crazy to think he would still get paid either way the same just a different world

I see Sancho commented on a Rashford's post about his first game at Villa, stating "freedom".

The guy is embarrassing, he's not exactly tearing it up in a Chelsea shirt. Do you think Manchester City looks at him with regret for selling him rather than getting him into the first team? I'm sure they think that way about Cole Palmer.

I do hope there's an obligation to buy in that loan deal with Chelsea.

Really does make my blood boil , not only you play for one of the biggest clubs in the world you also get paid millions for the pleasure

I genuinely hope he finds himself reaping what he sows, where top clubs wouldn't touch him with a barge pole and he ends up playing in lower leagues domestically or abroad. A little like what happened to Ravel Morrison.

Edit: My boss was saying something about Chelsea fans wanting to finish 15th so they don't have to pay more for Sancho. I think he got that wrong as just researching the loan deal, apparently the obligation to buy him is active if Chelsea finish 14th or higher. So even the Chelsea fans don't want him permanently.
