Damn :(

The Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala says the band have split after guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez refused to take part in a US tour.

Zavala blamed the move on Lopez’ interest in his new band, Bosnian Rainbows. In a furious tweet the vocalist demanded: “What am I supposed to be, some progressive housewife that’s cool with watching their partner go **** other bands?”

The duo formed The Mars Volta in 2001 after previous outfit At The Drive-In collapsed. They won a Grammy in 2009. Last year they said they’d gone on hiatus while Lopez concentrated on his new project.

But Zavala has claimed that was never really the case. In a series of tweets he said last night: “I guess a break from Mars Volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us.

“I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta. Sadly it’s over.”

Thanking fans for their support he continued: “For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going but Omar did not want to.

“I just feel really guilty for not even really saying the truth because ‘a hiatus’ is just an insult to the fans. All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that Mars Volta ever happened at all. God damn we had a blast.”

Zavala is working on a solo album while Bosnian Rainbows will release their debut album this year and tour the US next month.

Noooooooooooooooooo
I ******* love them, I've been on a Frances the Mute kick last few days!

Cedric is cursed after the immense At the Drive I'm went bang and now The Mars Volta. Real shame as both bands were very good.

Ah well i will always remember my mate getting chucked out the Barrowlands for trying to smoke whilst they were on stage, back when smoking indoors was legal.

Shame, but they haven't done anything amazing since Frances the Mute.

Bedlam in Goliath is incredible, in my view. First four albums, really.

Last two were quite uninspired. Noctourniquet was dull and lifeless. I really thought that it was going to be something special after seeing the live videos but no. I imagine Omar just didn't know where to go from here and lost enthusiasm.

Bosnian Rainbows sounds really bland from the first track that's been released.

I never managed to get into Bedlam or Amputechture as much as the first two albums. Perhaps I should give them another go.

Definitely do, they're both excellent though you have to be in the mood more for Bedlam since it's a complete sensory assault. Have a listen to this one:

I was all over De-Loused and still am, but never really clicked with anything after that. A bit too prog/experimental for my liking even though I appreciate them.

Their latest album was well short of the mark though so I think they were headed in this direction sadly.

I much prefer the experimental stuff. I really like De-Loused but I feel Amputechture and Bedlam have some absolutely cracking songs which surpass anything that's on De-Loused

I agree with this completely, while the last 2 have some OK songs they just pale in comparison to their earlier albums

I loved their first four albums but the last two have been poor so no great loss. Hopefully their new projects will give them back their edge.
