The Matrix

Crikey...I remember in my GCSE years how awesome this film was. We'd never seen bullet time, use of colour and mood quite like it. The idea was just fantastic.

Oh how the second and third parts sucked though :(

Damn... That is a long time. :( What a FANTASTIC film it was on a first watch through though. My eight year old brain just had no idea what was going, I just kept thinking "this is awesome" to myself.

Echoing above though, the sequels were abysmal in every way.

Meh... the sequels we'rent that bad!... just 'turn your brain off and eat some popcorn' type movies!... I watched em in one sitting on Saturday!!... R1 DVD Much better than the R2 versions!!..

The only reason the sequels were received so badly was because the first film really was utterly groundbreaking (if you haven't watched Anime before at least :p). They weren't bad films, just nowhere near as good.

But it is so trendy to say how much the 2nd two films suck! We must all be trendy!

In actual fact the 2nd two films complimented the first film fantastically. What you need to do is sit down and watch all 3 back to back after not having watched any of them for a couple of years.

I thought the 2nd two were a bit of a let down after watching them in the cinema. Then purchased the DVDs watched all 3 back to back and thought they were frigging great!

Can you expand on this a bit? Was there something cut out of the UK version?

don't patronize us by saying that it's trendy to think the other 2 films sucked by comparison to the first one, because they did by comparison.

They didn't share the same sense of association you could make with the first because the new films didn't position you effectively enough from the protagonists view point because everything suddenly became too outlandish, it became impossible to relate.

Unlike the first, which almost had a sense of whimsy about them - what with saying deja vu and various other little oddities could be explained away as being the matrix universe having "glitches". The latter two destroyed that verisimilitude and suffered for it, badly.

They also didn't have the same sense of character AT ALL and every character was a bit too hammy. Morpheus's character "development" was so serious pork laden then i almost converted to Judaism in protest.

I could go on..

Wow, can't believe it's been nearly 10 years

Still an awesome, awesome film. I remember coming out of the cinema feeling totally blown away, I was speechless. No film since has had that effect on me.

Their all a little more violent!...

The Scenes where Neo is Fighting Smith (in all three films) have been slightly softened by removing headbuts and flailing limbs..

Most noticeably the first proper fight between them in the subway in the first film, in the UK version you get one mabe two headbuts, in the (I think mine is Canadian) R1 version theres a succession of about 6 headbuts from Smith and neo returns them later on!..

Some of the Scentenal Scenes in the Dock in the Third film are a little more bloody too, with limbs and bodies being torn apart in the foreground and background!.. and people being tossed around like rag-dolls, I think you only see this once or twice in the R2 version, but there's loads of it in the R1 versions!!..

Flippin BBFC!... they should take a note out of the MPAA's book!.. they state they're not interested in 'Home releases' just whats shown at the cinema, so more stuff gets through on DVD/Video than in Theatres!..

Plus all the voices sound sooo much better as NTSC runs at the proper speed unlike the slight (but noticable) pitch difference in PAL as it runs a little faster!. I remember Keanu in a interview stated he sounded higher pitched watching a preview version on a PAL system a day after he'd watched it on an NTSC system!.

I remember one of my mates asking what it was like and the best review I could come up with was "Wow, all manner of crazy ****".

I was pretty much spot on with that as well.

I'm tempted to give the 2 sequels another bash because they were ruined for me with all the mind-****ing from the architect, that merovingian chap, the train-man, the oracle and morpheus. I genuinely didnt have a scoobie what was going on eventually :/

I agree in the sense that the film was 'groundbreaking' in terms of what type of film it was, the sequels were a hard act to follow & a lot of people were disappointed when they didn't meet the expectations of the 1st film. I get that feeling of 'I've seen this all before' whenever I watch a sequel & the matrix is no different.

great 1st Film (albeit predictable and cheesy)- sequels didnt quite fit as sequels to The Matrix but were good enuff as themselves.
