Hey people i have a question,
i didnt notice this before but windows takes 30% of your ram no matter how much u have, e.g. when i had 8gb it was taking 2.4g (30%) and when i upgrades to 16gb it was still taking 4.8gb (30%) is there anyway to lower this ?

oh and this is using windows 7, havent tested with anything else

Why? Unused ram is wasted ram.

Win7 uses a program called Superfetch, and it automagically loads into the ram the programs you use the most. This speeds up load times, but the ram is always available to use instantly if the program is not actually running. You need to get out of the XP way of thinking about ram :p. Win7 has far far superior memory management.

so the 30% its using at the start it isnt actually using ? because each of my java apps uses about 15% ram and when i run the first one it will jump to 45% ram instead of using some of the 30% already being taken and then when it gets to like 95% ram my comp just lags instead of letting me use that extra 4.8gb

Are you actually looking at the commit charge of running apps, or including the cached memory that is still available for apps to use if it wishes?

If it's committed then 4.8GB is a bit extreme and I'd only explain that due to one or more of the following:

- Unnecessarily oversized page file.
- RAM disk software
- Heavy background server processes (like a database server)
- Malware

I hit 2GB used out of 16GB on bootup, and that's with a few highly inefficient system tray apps, some consuming as much as a couple hundred MB each (unnecessarily in cases) for connected peripherals (webcam, trackir, g13, mouse, keyboard, steering wheel, joystick), without which the amount of memory used would drop down to just over 1GB.

Windows 7 Prefetch/Superfetch making the best out of your system.

Honestly, start up your system, check your RAM usage (will be at around 25-30%) and then put it to sleep and wake up. The RAM usage will lower by at least 10% and all the current apps will still be opened.

Magic.

For me.....
Windows is using 1.80gb,
Caching progs to mem 4.2gb
Free 2.3gb
