My trusty Focus is getting on a bit and my girlfriend and I are soon going to look to replace it with something newer, shinier and all round better. A car I have always admired has been the MX5 as a lightweight, reliable and fun choice, something that I can enjoy as well as getting me from A-B.

Now, a change in my circumstances over the last year has made the prospect of owning one a very real possibility. Me and my girlfriend live together and now work at the same company, so we only need the one car (although my girlfriend may be eligible for a company car come November). Our commute is 12 miles/20 minutes each way (8 miles of which is dual carriageway).

I was hoping some of the MX5 drivers here could give me an insight as to what these cars are like for everyday use. Are they comfortable enough to live with everyday? I was impressed with it on the quick test drive I had (2ltr 6-speed), even on the motorway it was quite smooth and powerful enough not to be a chore, but I only spent about 10 minutes cruising at about 60-70 with the roof down.

Fuel economy: Is it a killer? Book figure seems to be about 35MPG combined, (I currently get about 39MPG in my 1.6 Focus)....but then, I know how misleading book figures can be. Whilst I'm not buying a car with MPGZzzzzzzz in mind, I would like it to be capable of some measure of efficiency and know in advance if it drinks like a fish.

Folding soft tops: This will probably be the option we go for. Anything I should be wary of? Apart from wind noise on the motorway (although as stated, only 8 miles of my commute is motorway driving), what are they like to live with. Are there any special requirements on caring for a cloth top? Are they prone to leaking, or fairly well engineered on the MX5? Also, is it right than you can buy a detachable hard top to fit during the winter months? Bear in mind, the car will be parked overnight in a secure underground car park. Also, I know that some have a powered roof, but the one I drove had a manual roof that was so easy to operate, I could do it in 5 seconds flat sitting in the drivers seat; is it really worth finding/paying for an example with a powered mechanism?

Options and trim: We still haven't fully researched what's available. As per thread title, it will be a MK3, as we both would like to have a newer car...although I'm aware how popular older MXs are, I really like the look of the newer ones and would prefer to own a car a maximum of 4 years old if I can. I don't have a huge amount of demands options wise; air-con would be nice and Ive heard of some models having a Bose stereo setup; worth hunting one of these down?

I test drove a 2.0 litre Sport with a 6-speed box which felt great to drive and is probably the one I'd look at; I'd like this car to be an appreciable step up in power terms, but I'd like to hear opinions on the 1.8. As for gearbox, does the 6-speed offer much in terms of driveability? Would it be the better the better choice for a car which will get used on the motorway each day? Should I consider the 5-speed instead?

Reliability: One assumes that being Japanese it will never break down(rite?), but it never asks to beg the question of what peoples own experiences are.

Budget: We are probably looking to spend about £7500-£8000. I've seen some nice examples for this sort of price range, but it would help if anyone could give me a steer of what to expect from some of the options (a vague request I know) at this sort of price range. Is that a sensible budget, or am I falling short of finding a good example?

Anyway, I'll open the floor now, and sorry for the long post. I'd be really interested to hear your opinions and ownership experiences.

tl:dr - wishful thinking or a sound choice?

spend about £7500-£8000

Sorry, had to :D

Don't really have much to say about the MX5, but illustrating there are some other options if you are looking in this segment! :p

Lot's of MX5 owners here though so I am sure you will get more than your share of infos!

We have an 06 Mk3 and its done 120k :p Had very few issues with it, just little things like a squeak etc, very reliable little car. We have the 2.0 Sport which is the one to have for spec and cant fault it. Averages around 35mpg on a very mixed route.

Bought an 07 back in October, on my iPhone at the moment so I can give a better response tomorrow from a PC!
Fantastic little cars though.

Personally I'd find it pretty hard ignoring the S2000, but it does seem to fall short of your age requirement by about 3 years for a good one (unless you begin entering the 'may be a shed' territory).

Housey got one for his OH recently and they look brilliant. Shame they don't do a quicker engine personally but I guess that's not what the car is about.

Dead reliable I've read 'cause there is so little to go wrong.

The insurance difference between an MX-5 and S2000 is going to be massive unless you're 40 with a billion years NCB. MX-5 for me is abut £500, S2000 is almost 4x as much.

Dare I say it'd be worth having an S2000 for the noise of an F20c screaming its tats off at 80 billion RPM with the roof down over a Mazda any day of the week for the hike in insurance costs? :D

The Mazda look like a nice car though, maybe a little tamer and more grown up.

I can insure pretty much any other car cheaper than an S2000, for example Porsche Boxster S' and BMW M3's.

Sure the S2000 is probably better (totally different) than an MX-5, but for me (and most people) the insurance cost even exceeds other much quicker/mroe expensive stuff.

Unfortunately S2000s are on the WTF Boat when it comes to insurance :(

I insure mine more than reasonably, have been able to since I got it at 23, some people get ridiculous quotes and then everything in-between.

My parents have one, MPG isn't too good I'd say closer to 25MPG than 35. It also has a really annoying issue where the passenger window doesn't have a good seal with the rubber on the hardtop, so theres annoying wind noise at higher speeds.

Apart from that it seems pretty sweet, Not that I expect they'll ever put me on the insurance for it :/

That looks amazing Housey. I guess that's the newest Roadster with the folding hard top? That will be out of my price range unfortunately.

I was thinking about an S2000 but I was under the impression they were more expensive to buy, as well as to insure? And yes, I imagine they are somewhat harder edged than the MX5...

3 Basic Specs - 1.8, 2.0, 2.0 Sport

From memory the standard spec (starting at 1.8) is

1.8

Plastic Steering Wheel with no Steering Audio Controls

1.8 Option Pack
----------------

As above but with:
Alloy Wheels
Leather Steering Wheel with Audio Controls
Premium Cloth Roof

2.0 Option Pack
----------------

As above but with:
2.0 Litre Engine

2.0 Sport
----------------

As above but with:
6 Speed Gearbox

Other options available included

If you go for the Roadster Coupe (folding hardtop) then Climate Control is standard throughout but the rest of the spec is the same as the soft-top's above.

Hope this helps pick a spec anyways :)

It's the 2L Sport Tech, which comes with every option. It currently sits at 33mpg which is where it's sat since we bought it really.

We've got an 06 plate 2.0 Sport and its the best car we've ever owned no questions asked!

If you want to know anything in detail give me a shout

We've had it for just over 2 years now and it hasn't cost us a penny apart from regular servicing.

I'll break it into a couple of small sections.

Everyday stuff:
Very easy to live with, comfy enough to cruise in for long distances and not too loud. I would look for out with a hard top though as it makes it a lot nicer in the winter and there about a grand to buy afterwards if you suddenly decide you need one.

Trim Levels:
I don't actually know a great deal about the range but ours is pretty much the top spec, full heated leather seats, BOSE sound system, Climate, 2.0 with 6 speed box, LSD and Bilstein shocks.
Deffinaly go for the 2.0 with 6 Speed box, its a lot sweeter than the 5 speed i found and the 6th for cruising is much much nicer, it puts it at about 2900rpm at 70mph

Fuel:
We average 35mpg in the 2 years but that was almost all with my missus driving it on a 6 mile trip to work with lots of roundabouts, she's just moved offices so i'm expecting it to rise to 37-40mpg average
Linky to said data I get about 37-39 driving it on my 70 mile round trip to work and thats not exactly driving carefully :D

Oh yeah and be aware that the 1.8's dont get traction/stability control, even though it is a bit girly it has saved me a couple of times in the wet if you hit a patch of diesel on a roundabout etc

Reliability:
Its a mazda... end of

Soft top:
Just make sure its been treated well, IE treated with proper softtop protector ATLEAST once a year

Only other thing i'd do is make sure you get it lowered and get a full alignment done as the handling out of the box is iffy at best, head over and check out any owners club and its peppered with reports of this. Read this and i seriously SERIOUSLY suggest you go there if you get one as it totally transforms the car into what it should always have been.

Your car is the top spec as the only options for the 2.0 Sport is CC (as opposed to AC) and the BOSE system. All the other options are already fitted as standard.

That, as far as I can remember, is only fitted to the 2.0 Sport.

2006 2.0 with option pack (non-Sport), cloth seats and roof, 5-speed box, non-Bose stereo replaced with Alpine unit, lowered suspension, Eibach sway bars and front suspension tower bar.
Had it from new and it still makes me smile.

I've got a 2007, 2.0 Sport and love it :)

I've tracked it once, and have another day booked.

I never considered the 1.8, I wanted the LSD, 2.0 and 6speed box. Mine has the BOSE and Climate. I've since painted the dash strip (from "piano black" to Copper Red to match exterior), lowered and had a geometry setup.

Currently considering an exhaust as I'd like a little more noise :)

I've previously owned a 2005 S2000 and whilst it has more power, I'd say the MX-5 is easier to drive, has cheaper running costs, cheaper insurance and has more creature comforts.

Meh.

The Mk3.5 is vastly superior to the Mk3 IMHO.

The Mk3 engines are not very refined, and the 2 litre is about 50hp down on making it a much more enjoyable car. The ratios in the 5 speed are too long, and the ride is all wrong; dive under braking, body roll, nervousness in the chassis whenever you ask it to do something. That's my experience of a Mk3 anyway, albeit on 6 year old tyres which may have quite a lot to do with it. It's too unpredictable for my liking, makes me want to drive like a nun. Oh, and electronic throttle and vague hydraulic clutch - do not want.

The Mk3.5 I thought was a good bit better with the revised engine, suspension and 6 speed box, but still nowhere near as good as an S2000. I put the MX5 in the category of "you kind of like cars and want something a bit fun, but don't really know any better".

Please form an orderly queue if you would like to flame me for that last remark ;)
