The poster for Quake I boasted it was 'The Most Important PC Game Ever', as evidenced by this thread.
What would you say is the most important PC game ever? Which has done the most to advance the cause of gaming on the PC? It doesn't necessarily need to be a great game, although that'd probably help.
I think Quake has a valid claim, in that it really kickstarted the mod community which for me is one of the strongest strings to the PC's bow. The 3D gaming, mouselook, netcode - without it, would some of our favourite games play the way they do today? Half-life was based on the Quake engine - would it have been so revolutionary without it?

I really enjoyed HL1, it was probably one of the first games i played with a story line that kept me hooked.
