The my favourite book thread

The Stand by Stephen King. Thick enough to choke an elephant by just fantastic storrytelling. Next time I get time to read it will be the fifth time around.

Also, Illusions:Tales of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach. A much slimmer book in comparison, but it bent my head the first time I read it. Another one I read every few years.

So in the last four years I've changed my mind. I still love All Quiet On The Western Front, but I think Starship Troopers has overtaken it as my favourite.

That, or possibly The Forever War.

Oh god can I not pick loads of books? :p

I really can't decide!

Clockwork Orange if forced.

But then there Winter Queen, Dune, Colour of Magic, 1984, Deadhouse Gates, Gorky Park and Book Thief which are all fantastic!

My favourite book is probably Crime and Punishment, I loved 1984 too though & recently read it again just to see if it still stood up, I would say it does.

So many great reads out there, I've always had a special place for Of Mice & Men, I don't know exactly why, maybe it was the first book I read that didn't have a "happily ever after" ending.

Even after the four years since I first posted in this it's still War and Peace.

However, I have a new second favourite which is Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov

1984 is amazing, ripped off so many times (or "retold) that it can be mistaken/forgotten by a lot of people. Not my personal favourite though.

One of the Terry Pratchett books in the Discworld get it. Hard to choose between Guards Guards, Interesting Times or Soul Music. All 3 make me laugh so much without really trying too hard.

The Troy series by David Gemmell. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I must've read that series (3 books) about 10 times already. Every time I find something new or another layer of awesomeness. It really REALLY leaves me gutted thinking that he died and never got to do The Odyssey next. It just pees me off every time the reality hits. :(:(

RIP David Gemmell, one of my favourites too. Although for me, I think The Knights of Dark Renown was my favourite of his books.

One of my overall favourites has to be The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov. Sci Fi at its best I think.

I've never read any of his other books as I thought there's no point. It's never going to be as good as the Troy books, but if you think it's worth it, I might give that book a go.

Oh can I add One Flew Over the Cucoos Nest? Love that book!

I personally couldn't really get into War and Peace, at the time I did have a huge puke of other books to read which may have distracted me but I just struggled to really enjoy it.

Nation by Terry Pratchett

Absolutely awesome, not a discworld book but still has the crazy descriptions...and not a "childrens book".

The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin for me.

I'd gotten bored of reading and as such hadn't for a while. Had this recommended and thoroughly loved it, pretty much everything about it, and I can happily re-read it time and time again.

I would definitely recommend it. Never did find a book of his I didn't like.

Druss the Legend is an excellent book that is a good start into the Drenai saga.

Then there is the excellent Sipstrassi tales, starting with Wolf in Shadow.

Jon Shannow, Waylander, swords of night and day, as well as his standalone novels.

It really is all good :)
